Fabulous shake-down weekend at the Wooden Boat Show at North House in Grand Marais. Special thanks to Will Kaul for making it happen - a pure pleasure being able to deliver it to him at this great gathering. Northhouse staff couldn't have been more professional and personal.. A great start for a well intended, fine traditional small craft. A few more touches and - Onward!

Who’s an artist, anyway ???? A review of a reviewer.

This pleasant review is greatly appreciated and thank you Ed Newman, but I must say I'm a little uncomfortable being referred to as an artist, because, well, I’m not.

My perspective is that artists create inspirational or expressive one off works in various mediums, often experimentally.

Like artists, I strive for a degree of distinction but these are not my designs. The modeling, drawings, and prints are derived from a rather mechanical task of taking accurate measurements of the old existing boats, drawing those lines out on a a drafting table, then initiating a limited production of said pieces.

I would suggest such work, in its various forms, comes from the skilled hands of craft workers, artisans and boatbuilders with, perhaps, an artistic touch. Thank you.

Thanks Ed with one small correction. May I add the definition of an artisan; a person or a company that makes a high quality or distinctive product in small quantities, usually by hand or with traditional methods.

In a few weeks Julian Nelson, my dad, will be turning 100 years old, and as far as we know, he’s the only person to live 100 years steady in the Harbor City, except for a stint in WW II. To celebrate the occasion we’re having a birthday party for him from 2-4 p.m., February 21 at the Egg Toss Bakery Cafe, 41 Manypenny Avenue in Bayfield.

Another successful launch with safe harbor found in the Bayfield Maritime Museum. From field documentations, 1'' scaled contemporary half hull models. The Scout, housed in the museum - The Green Boat, Bayfield built by Olaf Edwards in 1937 - The Bobbie, Bayfield built by Evan Christensen in 1939.

Always a pleasure having Jim Erickson visit the shop. He's moving a little slower but looking good and loving life.
Jim caught me planking up an old fine Rhrinelander canoe and I thought I'd try out my new camera on a genuine human.

A good winter flick.

When this was sent to me I thought 'two hours in French', I don't think so, but it turned out to be time well spent.

French Canadian watermen haul their boats, spend the winter building a small craft from a half hull (wait until you see that process), then off again in the spring.
