Starting October 10th in New Bern, North Carolina…the annual Mumfest kicks off as one of the most gorgeous and memorable events of the year on the state’s coast! Held throughout historic downtown and along the riverfront, this free two-day festival brings live music, food, shopping, family activities, and colorful mum displays into the heart of the city. Nearly 300 vendors and food trucks are expected, giving visitors plenty to browse, from handmade goods and artwork to festival favorites and sweet treats. Multiple stages keep music and entertainment going, while the KidsZone, amusement rides, BMX stunt shows, dog performances, and other attractions add even more to see. Saturday’s lineup includes The Wilder Blue, Sam Morrow, Biscuits ’n’ Gravy, and Packhouse, with more music continuing Sunday. Runners can also join the MUMosa Fun Run and 5K. You can enjoy the waterfront setting, explore Union Point Park, and visit the Tryon Palace gardens, which are free during MumFest weekend and feature more than 14 acres of landscaped grounds and chrysanthemums. Festival hours are 10 a.m.–6:30 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Sunday. Free parking and shuttle service are available from Lawson Creek Park.

The oldest town in North Carolina has about 250 residents and no traffic light. ⚓

Bath was incorporated in 1705, which makes it older than the idea of North Carolina as we know it. It was a real port once, busy with tar, pitch and lumber headed out to the Caribbean. Blackbeard kept a house there and reportedly married a local woman before things went badly for him at Ocracoke. St. Thomas Episcopal, built in 1734, is still standing and still the oldest church building in the state.

Today the whole place is about four blocks of colonial houses, a creek full of morning mist, and a waterfront so quiet you can hear a skiff rope creaking from a hundred yards off. There is no tourist machinery. No outlet mall. Just a town that decided at some point that it was already the right size.

Carolina is full of these little towns that time forgot on purpose. Which one is your favorite to slip away to?
