The National Recreational Boating Safety Survey (NRBSS) is a nationwide survey sponsored by the U.S. Coast Guard to understand how many people go boating, what types of boats they use, and how often they are on the water. As part of the survey, we are asking for volunteers to complete a brief sign-up page asking about their boating habits and share their contact information with the Coast Guard so a wide range of boaters can be invited to participate in the larger NRBSS survey later in the year.

ATTENTION!
NJDOT has been notified that there is a downed line in the water to the immediate north of the Route 72 bridge by Bonnet Island.

While outside of the State navigation channel, the public should stay clear of the area until the situation has been addressed. The State Police Marine Service Bureau has been notified, as has Stafford Township and Ship Bottom.

All public should be advised to avoid the area.

GPS vs AIS - Basic Things To Know ✅⚓️

GPS (Global Positioning System) uses satellite signals to determine the vessel’s position, speed over ground (SOG), and course over ground (COG). It mainly tells the navigator where the vessel is and how it is moving.

AIS (Automatic Identification System) uses VHF radio to automatically exchange information between vessels and shore stations. It provides details such as vessel identity, position, COG, SOG, heading, navigational status, destination, and ETA.

In simple terms:
📍 GPS tells you where you are.
🚢 AIS helps you know who is around you and their reported movement.

Both systems support situational awareness and safe navigation, but AIS information should always be cross-checked with radar, visual observations, and other available navigation information.

Dredging at the Harvey Cedars channels is active and Aids to Navigation (AToN) have been removed in advance of the maintenance dredging. Boaters are urged to utilize extreme caution and SLOW/No Wake Speeds when operating through the construction zone and should stay away from all floating equipment.

The public is advised to use channel 63 to contact the equipment, as necessary.
