TAKES OVER SUMMIT ARTSPACE ON TUSC APRIL 27

BARBERTON, OH— Just look for the creative sparks coming from Summit Artspace on Tusc during Barberton Fourth Friday, April 27, and you will have found B-Art, The Annual Barberton Student Art Show.

The show, with an estimated 900 works from students in the Barberton City School District, runs for one night only, 5-8 p.m., at Summit Artspace on Tusc, 571 W. Tuscarawas Ave. Admission is free. This is the sixth year for the event.

This year’s judges are: well-known national artist Jack Diamond, who has studios in New York City and Barberton; Debby Rolland, vice president of community impact for the Barberton Community Foundation; and John Fitzpatrick, vice president of the Summit Artspace Board of Directors and the collaboration service delivery manager at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company.

There will be first, second and third place awards for the high school and middle school, as well as honorable mention recognition. The Barberton Community Foundation sponsors the cash prizes.

“Summit Artspace on Tusc is proud to be the gallery location for the student show. There is an amazing energy around the young artists and their families that lights this place up on Barberton Fourth Friday. Everyone wants to see the art,” said Kamelia Fisher, executive director of Summit Artspace.

The show is organized by Barberton High School art teacher Ron White, who started the annual event in 2012. White, fellow art teacher Dana Suloff, and a team of volunteers put the show up the day before and then tear it down immediately after.

Summit Artspace on Tusc is operated by the Summit Artspace organization which also manages Summit Artspace on East Market in downtown Akron.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS - ANOTHER GREAT REASON TO VISIT B-TOWN THIS SUMMER !!!!

I just love the City Wide Yard Sale, which this year will be June 11th through the 14th. This is a great time to sell your junk and buy all new junk. Who doesn't love to buy new junk?

The City Wide Yard Sale is the brilliant idea of Barberton City Councilman Megyes. Those are two words you rarely read in the same sentence, "brilliant" and "Councilman." Craig and I graduated from BHS in 1971 and I think he makes a great ward councilman.

Why don't you come to Barberton that weekend, have a great Barberton Chicken Dinner and buy some new junk? Its all to the betterment of Barberton and this is what we love about it.

"Well.....It is Better than it Was !! "

The Devil truly is in the details. Yesterday about a dozen of us were at the Piggery, working away. We turned on our ceiling fans, graciously provided to us by the Barberton Community Foundation and it was quite pleasant in the Piggery.

While most of us were cleaning and straightening things up, three members who are expert painters were doing the painting. Our friends at the Barberton Jaycees had bought us the paint and we greatly appreciate that and them. The Jaycees invest their Cherry Blossom profits back into Barberton and for this we truly thank them.

As Barbertonians we deserve to have nice things like the Erie Depot. We have a proud history and proud traditions to uphold. Therefore we try and put a 110% effort into everything we do. We always go for the win. We are not interested in receiving a "participation" trophy. As my dear old dad would always say, "well......it is better than it was." Dad was a father in the 1950s and in the 1950s this was about as high of praise as you could expect from your dad.

Pictured are two photos of the Piggery in Section 4. The first one was taken in the 2000 and the second one was taken yesterday. Admittedly the Piggery did not look decrepit when we started to paint two weeks ago, but it looks a heck of a lot better now than it did two weeks ago.

Historic preservation is a Marathon race, it certainly is not a Sprint. If you try to turn it into a Sprint you get poor quality, and as we are all Barbertonians, we do not deserve poor quality.
