OCTOBER 12
1835 — Stephen F. Austin’s army of approximately 300 Texian volunteers began advancing toward San Antonio de Béxar. The march opened the campaign to drive General Martín Perfecto de Cos’s forces from the city. tshaonline.org
1838 — Anson Jones informed U.S. Secretary of State John Forsyth that the Republic of Texas had withdrawn its request for annexation. Texas would remain an independent republic for several more years. tshaonline.org
1849 — Captain Randolph Barnes Marcy camped beside the Double Mountain Fork of the Brazos River during a cold norther. His expedition passed through the area now known as Stonewall County. tshaonline.org
1886 — A powerful hurricane struck near Sabine Pass, flooding portions of the Texas coast as far as 20 miles inland. The storm also severely damaged the railway between Sabine Pass and Beaumont. Draft Conceptual Plan_13_05_06.docx
1919 — Doris “Dorie” Miller was born in Waco. He later earned the Navy Cross for helping wounded sailors and firing an antiaircraft gun during the attack on Pearl Harbor.
