We have had a lot of people lately affected by financial institutions raising the interest rates on their credit cards and loans... ALMOST MONTLY! If you have a variable interest rate on your machine's bank loan or on anything you hold a balance on, I urge you to start to pull your statements from the last twelve months and check them. If your interest rate keeps going up, call them and complain and ask for a reduction. Yes, they "can" raise your interest rates due to the feds but they do not have to and you can have it reduced.

Powersports Retailers will use any marketing tactics to make a sale using words like "DOT Approved" or "DOT Certified". The DOT does not approve or certify anything. The legislators make laws. The NHSTA sets the standards for those laws. The DOT manages road projects and administers programs related to road safety. Don't believe us? Parts are either DOT compliant or they are not. It is unlawful for anyone to market a product as compliant when it is not. It is not unlawful to market it as DOT approved. Don't be scammed.

A "particular" and popular UTV/SXS Group has started a GoFundMe for legal fees in result of being harassed and ticketed by the police. Our association's stance on this is SIMPLE. THE DRIVERS ARE WRONG. In states without street legal legislation, these UTV/SXS vehicles must be brought up to DOT compliance or they are not road legal. There is no reciprocity for off road vehicles that are made street legal under state law (not federal). Registering it in another state, in your name or a business, and mounting a license plate, DOES NOT automatically declare your UTV/SXS safe and legal. Period. We ask you do not support or give money to any organization or persons that support this. KEEP THE ROADS SAFE AND THE ENTIRE STREET LEGAL COMMUNITY IN A POSITIVE LIGHT.

For those of you with a street legal plated UTV/SXS from NC, WV, or TN (or another state) who use their machine in Virginia, this is for you. Regardless of your state of residency or state of machine registration, make sure you have the *NEW* minimum insurance coverage for your on-road policy if you plan on traveling on Virginia roads. YOUR OUT OF STATE REGISTRATION DOES NOT OFFER FULL RECIPROCITY like a passenger car. You MUST meet these minimum requirements in Virginia. BE SAFE!

The US Street Legal UTV Association does not only promote doing DOT Compliance builds to do street legal conversions correctly, we also promote SAFETY. The holiday season of 2021 is among us. We are starting to see posts more frequent in other groups of accidents. Alcohol or drug use is usually and always involved. YOU DO NOT NEED ALCOHOL TO HAVE A GOOD TIME WHEN OUT ON THE TRAILS. Automakers got lazy with side impact protection so the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety made the side impact test more challenging. Do you think a UTV/SXS would pass? THIS is why they are manufactured for off road use because they would NOT pass. As an individual owner, you can convert your machine to street legal without the required crash testing. However, applying out of state for a small plate, mounting that plate, then calling it street legal is NOT how you do it.

If you continue to ride your UTVs/SXSs and ATVs on public streets in states without street legal legislation, unless you have completed a full DOT compliance conversion and have a full sized plate, you could be arrested and have your machine impounded. Please do not allow the misinformation from those groups and pages that push "small plates 50 state legal" to jam you up. It could lead to a criminal record and loss of job opportunities. Four were recently arrested in PA. 👮

EDUCATION MINUTE WITH BRAYDON

Windshield Washers. We all need them. Most UTVs do not have them. To be street legal, you need them. Even if you are going the small plate route (in a state with street legal legislation) and washers are not required, installing this can be safety critical. We are all adults here who have driven regular cars. We all know what the point of the washer is so I will save you the explanation.

However, the other piece of the puzzle is cost. If you have a Polaris Rzr, a washer kit with wiper can run you up to $600 retail with a plug and play kit. These kits cost very little to make and are very overpriced by powersports retailers. You can create an independent circuit on your machine (meaning, running your own 12v lead) and install the parts and switch yourself for less than $30. Yes, $30. You can get parts from a junkyard or you can buy a reservoir, pump, water line, wire, and a switch from your local auto parts retailer. We do not recommend Amazon.

Now, a custom option will not come with a wiper and motor like your plug and play kit, but you can get a wiper on the cheap as well. You can do a search for universal wiper that self returns. Not all "return home" so be sure to look for that. These wiper motors can typically cost around $50 but you can also find options much less. If you want to go bargain basement, you can pull a wiper motor from the rear hatch of an SUV in a junkyard and adapt it easily to a UTV windshield frame.
