He doesn’t ask for applause.
But every night, when the rest of the world is rushing home, he’s rushing toward someone else’s worst moment.

A tow truck driver’s phone never rings with good news. It rings with panic. With tears. With shaking voices on the side of a dark highway. It rings when a single mom is stranded with her kids. When a young man just crashed his first car. When an elderly couple doesn’t know what to do. And without hesitation, he grabs his keys and goes.

Through pouring rain.
Through snowstorms.
Through traffic that refuses to slow down.
Through nights so cold the air hurts to breathe.

He pulls up not just with a truck — but with reassurance.

He sees people at their most vulnerable. Angry. Scared. Embarrassed. Broken down in more ways than one. And still, he shows up calm. Patient. Steady. He listens to stories he didn’t ask to hear. He absorbs frustration that isn’t his fault. He risks his life on highways where cars fly past inches away, because someone out there needs help.

Most people see a tow truck and think inconvenience.
But behind that wheel is a man carrying responsibility heavier than the cars he hauls.

He misses dinners.
He misses holidays.
He answers calls at 2 AM.
He works in silence while the world sleeps.

And when the job is done?
No spotlight.
No standing ovation.
Just another call waiting.

So here’s to the tow truck drivers — the quiet heroes of the roadside. The ones who turn chaos into calm. The ones who show up when everything else has stopped working. The ones who remind us that even in breakdowns, we are not alone.

Because sometimes, strength doesn’t look like glory.

Sometimes it looks like flashing amber lights in the dark. 🚨

Yesterday’s incident on I-95 is a heartbreaking reminder of how dangerous roadside work can be. Our deepest condolences are with the families, loved ones, and coworkers affected by this loss.

Please remember that the Slow Down, Move Over law applies to EVERYONE working on the side of the road — MaineDOT crews, emergency responders, tow operators, utility workers, construction crews, and more.
