Healing Voices' first delivery of our wellness totes was an emotional but rewarding success! Thank you to the Central Maine Medical Center Cancer Care Center's amazing care team, Sherri Turcotte, Sarah Henderson, and Peggy Rushton, for helping to make this possible and for the warm welcome.

We are honored to support your head and neck cancer patients in any way we can.

Today's Wellness Highlight #2: Xylimelts

Dry mouth is one of the most common and uncomfortable side effects of head and neck cancer treatment. I didn't understand how severe it could be until one morning when I woke up with my top lip stuck to my teeth, something I was not prepared for. Pulling it free caused a painful sore, and that's when I realized what losing my salivary glands actually meant.

Xylimelts quickly became one of the most important tools in my nighttime routine. Before falling asleep, I put two tablets (one on each side of my upper gums) in my mouth. The tablet adheres to the gums and slowly melts throughout the night. They are also great at any time of day, whenever I'm struggling with a dry mouth.

Xylimelts are provided as a comfort aid based on my experience. They are not intended to diagnose, treat, or replace medical care. Our goal is to help patients feel prepared and supported with items that have brought me real comfort during a difficult part of the journey.

Thank you for reading!

Today's Wellness Highlight #3: Glass Water Bottle

During treatment for oral, head, and neck cancer, one of the first things the radiation oncologist tells you is to rinse your mouth regularly with a baking soda and saltwater mixture. In the beginning, I made mine in a drinking glass whenever I needed it β€” which meant stopping what I was doing and mixing it up several times a day.

Later, I learned that many patients were using their Gatorade bottles, mixing their rinse in the morning and carrying it with them throughout the day. It was simple, smart, and convenient.

But with more information coming out about chemicals in plastics, I knew I wanted to offer something safer. That's why our wellness totes include glass bottles with grippers. They are sturdy, easy to clean, and a safer alternative.

Now I make my rinse first thing in the morning, carry it with me, use it throughout the day, pour out whatever's left, wash the bottle, and repeat the next day. My bottle of "salty BS for the day" (as I like to call it!) is never too far away! πŸ˜‰β˜ΊοΈ

It's a small change that makes a big difference in comfort, safety, and daily routine, and I'm grateful to pass that convenience along to others walking this path.

Today's Wellness Product Highlight #5 - Throw Blanket, Lip Balm, Puzzle Book, Journal, and a Pen.

These items provide comfort in a different way ... the kind that supports the heart, mind, and body during long treatment days.

When I began chemotherapy, my daughters gave me a cozy blanket, and it became something I relied on every time I went in for treatment. Infusion rooms need to be cold, but having a soft, comfortable blanket to wrap around myself made those hours a little more bearable.

Alongside the blanket, we include simple items that offer gentle moments of relief.

One of my favorites is an unflavored lip balm from Brayer Ridge Soap made right in Newport, Maine. My lips get so dry, so I keep one in my purse, one by my bedside table, and one in the kitchen.

The wonderful owner even donated a portion of our order in support of Healing Voices, kindness that means so much.

Next, we include a puzzle book in each bag as a gentle distraction, and a journal and pen to offer a place to breathe, reflect, or simply pass the time.

Comfort comes in many forms. These small items can make long treatment days a little gentler. We hope these pieces bring warmth and ease to someone who needs it. πŸ’—
