Friendly PSA for those of you who take your truck to quick l**e places.. think twice! (Part 1)

I have been in this industry for 35 years and if I had a dollar for every quick l**e screw up I've seen or fixed I would be rich. We got a phone call from a customer that said his L5P shut down on him while driving down the road. The truck got towed in and sure enough, the engine is locked up. A quick inspection found this.. an oil filter on the truck that doesn't belong there. I called the customer and sure enough just a short time ago he had taken the truck to a local quick l**e joint for an oil change. The filter on the right is the filter spec'd by GM for the L5P. The filter on the left is what was installed by the quick l**e joint. The only spec these two filters share are the threads. Who even knows what oil they used. More to come on this...

Electrical gremlins can be tough to diagnose, especially CAN bus issues. The right tools with plenty of knowledge and experience are the only way you can do it properly. This particular Ram came in with a no start condition and lots of weird things going on. It had 21 different communication and various other faults with half of the modules in the truck not communicating at all or intermittently. We were able to diagnose it and trace the problem back to behind the dash, the handiwork of a little mouse. Don’t trust your diesel truck to just any repair shop, bring it to the pros at Stett’s Diesel Trucks.

🚨⛽ DIESEL FUEL GEL WARNING ⛽🚨

From the folks at Hot Shot's Secret:

Diesel fuel gelling occurs when the temperature drops and the paraffin wax in the fuel starts to crystallize and thicken, making the fuel gel-like. This can clog the entire fuel system since the fuel solidifies and loses its ability to flow. Diesel fuel gelling is similar to how a wax candle remains solid until lit, at which point the wax progressively becomes a free-flowing liquid. Then, as it cools, the wax becomes solid again.

AT WHAT TEMPERATURE DOES DIESEL FUEL GEL?

Diesel fuel gels when temperatures fall below 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit or -12 degrees Celsius. The diesel gelling temperature depends on the composition and quality of the fuel. However, the gelling process starts when the fuel hits the cloud point, which gives it a cloudy appearance. The cloud point can begin at temperatures as high as 32°F but generally starts at 20°F for #2 diesel fuel.

As the temperature continues to drop, the fuel will reach what is known as the pour point, which is usually 6°F to 10°F lower than the cloud point. At this stage, the fuel thickens to the point where it can no longer flow properly. The final stage is the diesel gel point, which occurs when the fuel has completely solidified and no longer flows, usually around 10°F to 15°F.

It’s important to note that if engine complications occur at temperatures above 10°F to 15°F, the issue is likely due to ice rather than gel.

Companies like Hot Shots, Howes, Lucas and Power Service have anti-gel additives. If you have a break down and need us, we're here. Stay warm, stay safe.

We work with extended warranty and insurance claims.

🔌 PLUG IN YOUR BLOCK HEATER

Temperatures are going to be in the single digits around the DFW Metroplex with windchills below zero. Plugging in your block heater will help prevent your cooling system from freezing, help reduce strain on your batteries when starting and reduce warm up time. Once started, let your truck warm up before driving. Be safe, stay warm. If you need us, we're here for you.
