Did you know? In 2019 the Ram 6.7L Cummins engine changed from a solid flat tappet to a hydraulic roller lifter. But why? Why change a design that had worked flawlessly for 30 years? To "improve efficiency and reduce noise". Since its inception the flawed design has resulted in an expensive failure rate rivaling that of the CP4 in the 6.7L Powerstroke and 6.6L Duramax engines (Cummins tried the CP4 too in 2019 but quickly ditched that - more on this later). Early warning signs of lifter failure: a cold start tick, misfire and/or slight rough running at idle. If you catch it soon enough the destruction might not be so bad. You are then faced with two options: replace the flawed design with more flawed design OR convert it back to a solid flat tappet that was proven for decades. Thankfully, like with the CP4 disaster, the aftermarket has once again come through with an option for the latter. What's the trade off? Periodic valve adjustment, reliability and that good ole Cummins sound.

Cylinder 6 tapped out. If you've ever wondered what too high EGT's will do to your diesel engine, here ya go. Bad tuning, too much fuel, heavy loads and a lead foot.. this 6.7L Cummins just became a boat anchor.

Should rotors and brake pads be replaced together? YES! And that's a double YES! for severe duty applications. Putting new pads on old rotors can cause performance, safety and longevity issues in addition to increasing the chance for brake fade, vibration and noise. Sliding pins should also be inspected and re-greased with the right lubricant. In this picture you will see a severe example of this exact scenario. This new to us customer came in with multiple complaints about the brakes on his truck stating "I just had them replaced". The shop he had been taking his truck to for years clearly had been simply "pad slapping" the truck, installing new set after new set on old rotors. Only about a third of this latest set of pads was actually contacting the rotor. The pads also appeared to be unbranded, likely an Amazon special. At Stett's Diesel Trucks we do not and will not cut corners, if you want the job done right the first time.. give us a call.

Friendly PSA for those of you who take your truck to quick l**e places.. think twice! (Part 1)

I have been in this industry for 35 years and if I had a dollar for every quick l**e screw up I've seen or fixed I would be rich. We got a phone call from a customer that said his L5P shut down on him while driving down the road. The truck got towed in and sure enough, the engine is locked up. A quick inspection found this.. an oil filter on the truck that doesn't belong there. I called the customer and sure enough just a short time ago he had taken the truck to a local quick l**e joint for an oil change. The filter on the right is the filter spec'd by GM for the L5P. The filter on the left is what was installed by the quick l**e joint. The only spec these two filters share are the threads. Who even knows what oil they used. More to come on this...
