Welcome back from spring break! Today’s is from our composites team member, Julian.

“This is my SW20 MR2. I had been looking for a car for a few months after wanting a project car for three years, and on a random day in September I saw the car on Facebook marketplace in Charlotte, paid the dude to drive it to Atlanta for me to see, and then trailered it back home to Jacksonville FL where it is currently.

It’s a 1992 Toyota MR2 base. The chassis has around 272,000mi 😭, though at some point in the last 2-3 years was swapped with another rebuilt 5S-FE with ~128,000mi. It has no rust and it made the trip from Charlotte to here. When I got it, it had a few modifications too, including likely a super cheap MAACO or DIY respray in a grey color (it was originally red), new rotors, a catch can, aftermarket wheels, new shifter cables, short shifter, and other small things.

Since then, I fixed the split front bumper from a previous accident, went over the areas of paint that were peeling with a lil spray paint (I’m saving up for a paint job right now), I put BC coilovers since all the shocks were cooked (all were original to the 34 yr old 272k mi car), new Kouki taillights, and resprayed the wheels in black since they were already spray painted anyways and were peeling. The car has also died in the middle of the road and overheated badly recently so I plan on fixing it or going to get it fixed (I have no experience with cars so any help would be massive!), and then I’ll get it repainted and new wheels since the car is kinda clapped rn.

It’s my first project so I don’t know all that much, but I want to keep the car a solid long time. Thanks!”

We’re back for another with our member Ian!
“This is my 1989 Geo Metro, which is a rebadged Suzuki Swift. The car has been in my family since the mid 90s, when my uncle drove it daily and then as a tractor. It had been sitting for a few years before I got it, apparent from the ecosystem taking over the bumpers and interior. Despite all that, I threw in a tractor battery and it cranked right up on 8 year old gas. The tailpipe had rusted off, so that straight piped 3 cylinder sounded like a V8. A new set of the cheapest (and sketchiest) eBay tires money can buy, a clutch, muffler, and countless other small things done in my front yard and it was back on the road.

It only puts out about 50 horsepower and handles corners like a boat, but to a newly-licensed high schooler, it might as well have been a Porsche. Since then I’ve just been doing maintenance and trying to clean it up. After washing the interior, I threw on some seat covers, a $3 cd stereo from a yard sale, and chased down some electrical issues. I paint-matched the bumpers at Home Depot and touched them up with a house paint sample, which has held up surprisingly well.

It’s slow, doesn’t have AC (pop-out windows ftw), unsafe at any speed, and beat-up, but I can’t complain about getting 50 mpg. If I had the space and money, I’d like to K-swap it or throw on a turbo, but it’s about time for the next project. It’s gotten me and my friends around, taught multiple people (myself included) to drive manual, and hauled more junk than most pickup trucks, and I’m gonna miss it.”

“I got my $2500 2000 Mazda Miata MX-5 “Sugoi” this past December, with 115,000 (real) miles. I have been shopping around for a RWD roadster for a while, and when this car appeared in Facebook Marketplace feed, I simply could not pass him up. The driver’s side door didn’t latch properly, the odometer was rolled back 40,000 miles (it shows 75,000), there was a CEL for EGR, the soft top was missing the rear window, the front lip was cracked, the paint is faded in multiple areas, the tires were dry-rotted, the pilot bearing is incredibly loud, the fog lights have a short to ground, engine oil leaked out everywhere, power steering fluid leaked out everywhere, and the car had years’ worth of undone, overdue maintenance. But hey, I don’t have to do emissions on this car.

I am the fifth owner of Sugoi, and I will likely not be last. Aside from driving the snot out of this car, I have been busy catching up on the years of deferred maintenance/repair that needed to be done, like the timing belt and brakes. The only modification that I am aware of is my $5 Ikea pillowcase tongue; everything else on the car (at least mechanically) is what came out of the factory in Hiroshima, Japan. I hate Sugoi nearly as much as I love him, and I really, really hope nothing else breaks on this car.”

Today’s submission is from Miles, our former Treasurer and S-10 Revival Engineering lead. Swipe to see and read about the cursed “Annabelle,” his 1965 Ford Mustang.
“I first got my mustang when I was 14 right after COVID hit. I always had an interest in cars from hot wheels to RC cars and everything in between so this was the next step to fuel my passion. We found the car on craigslist just outside of Atlanta and picked it up late in the summer. After getting it my mom made me put proper seatbelts in to replace the lap belts it came with stock. After a few safety upgrades I overhauled the main suspension components, bushings and upgraded the brakes. This made the car handle so much better and was a huge step up from the 60 year old technology. The car came swapped with a 302 ci V8 out of a 70s Ford F100 that suffered carburetor issues. After numerous rebuilds and part replacements I finally got it to run reliably. Next came overheating issues solved with a coolant flush and radiator cleaning/repair. For my senior project I got to prep and repaint the car myself, I went from the factory Bronze to the classic GT40 Le Mans color, Gulf Blue. This is the car that taught me how to work on and drive cars through Youtube videos and trial and error. No one in my family is mechanically inclined or as interested in cars as I am so I never had someone to show me how to do these things, but I learned how to teach myself. Nowadays I have plans for a manual transmission swap(currently has a 3speed slush box auto), power steering upgrade, cooling system improvements, hopefully an EFI swap, and more handling modifications.”

It’s our first of the year. Keep reading to hear from our current Composites Co-lead, Matt!
“I got this thing as a rust bucket off Facebook marketplace. It’s a 71 Chevy Nova, kind of. It’s really a 71 Pontiac Ventura but the previous owner had already changed the back end so I changed the front to finish the clone.

My dad and I did patch panels, some replacement panels, and lots of massaging to shave some emblems/lights and get it looking pretty straight before painting it matte dark gray with gloss black accents. We redid the interior with stitched black leather, an aftermarket gauge cluster, race seats, newer speakers, headliner, and a carpet.

It came with a junkyard small block and turbo 350 that quickly got pulled. For the engine, we assembled a stroker 383. It has a forged Eagle rotating assembly with 5.7” I beam rods, 4 bolt mains, a hydraulic roller cam, AFR heads, a little Weiand 142 blower, a Holley 4 barrel double pumper carb, and a Holley tunable distributor with a boost reference for tuning ignition timing. For the transmission, we went with a built 700r4 with a manual valve body.

Other than that, we’ve added Caltracs, 3.73 gears, a geared positraction differential, tubular control arms, subframe connectors, QA1 sway bars, front disc brakes, exhaust cutouts, a line lock, and more.

It’s now registered and on the road and makes a fun street/strip car, but projects never end.”

Happy ! Today’s post features our current Skills Coordinator, Tyler’s, two Toyota trucks. Here’s what he has to say:
“I am the proud owner of two very high milage Toyota trucks. The first of which is a 2011 Toyota Tundra with the 5.7L V8. I received this truck as a hand-me-down from my dad at the age of 16. Having been used as a work truck in construction for 250,000 miles, just about everywhere you look there’s some sort of dent, scratch, or imperfection. But through the eyes of a very recently licensed high-schooler, it was the coolest thing in the world. I drove it every day though the rest of high school, watching as the odometer rolled past the 300,000 mile mark, until I came to tech and had to leave the truck behind. Now it rests in my parents driveway waiting for me to address some concerning problems (potential head gasket leak) until it can become a daily driver once more.

When I got the truck, it already had a 4-inch lift kit and Fuel wheels with 35-inch all-terrain tires. I mainly just handle maintenance and repairs; notably, I fixed a corroded four-wheel-drive actuator over the summer.

Over the summer, I also purchased my 2007 single-cab, stick-shift Tacoma off Facebook Marketplace. I wanted something a little more convenient and fuel-efficient for getting around the city plus something to teach me how to drive manual while still being a little cool (in my eyes, at least). So far, it’s been a blast to drive and very handy for hauling stuff around.

After buying the truck, I plasti-dipped the emblems and rusty stock wheels matte black. I also restored all of the plastic trim, including the grille and front bumper, and I sanded down the foggy headlights to make them look a little newer.”
