The consumables at the end of a MIG gun may be small, but they play an important role in wire feeding, shielding-gas coverage, arc quality and uptime.

A few routine checks can help prevent avoidable problems:

• Clean spatter and buildup from the nozzle.

• Inspect the contact tip for debris, damage or excessive wear.

• Avoid wrapping the gun cable too tightly, which can kink the liner.

• Check cables and gas hoses for cracks, wear or damage.

• Replace nozzles, contact tips, diffusers and liners when they become worn.

Always follow the maintenance instructions for your specific machine and welding gun. Keeping common replacement consumables nearby can also help prevent a small worn part from creating unnecessary downtime.

Filler metal can look fine on the surface and still create problems if it has been stored improperly.

Moisture, dirt, oil and condensation can affect the condition and performance of welding wire, rods, electrodes and flux. Good storage practices include keeping consumables in their original packaging when possible, resealing opened packages, protecting products from temperature swings and storing them away from sources of contamination.

Some consumables, particularly low-hydrogen electrodes, have specific storage and handling requirements. Always follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer rather than assuming every filler metal can be stored the same way.

Before beginning the next job, inspect the packaging and the product itself. Rust, moisture exposure or damaged packaging may be signs that the consumable needs closer evaluation.
