Well, we learned something at the shop today. The S&S V124 in the Ness Highliner runs hotter that Dutch-Love, right? The answer was to install a Jagg 10-row oil cooler. I opted for an oil filter adapter for a more sanitary install. However, that moved the oil filter about an inch to the port side. That, in turn fouled the Hall-Effect sensor for crank position. I tried removing it, and reinstalling it, but there was just no room. I did find that AC Delco made a filter that was the same diameter, but shorter. It also didn't have an anti-drain back membrane and filtered down to 30 microns. 30 microns is important because a Harley EVO type engine filters on the scavenge return side, where oil pressure is lower. Perfect! It may not be pretty. But, I ride it a lot and it's important that it's a bit cooler for engine life. I also had the crank position sensor lose a big piece of epoxy in my hand. The former shop broke it (probably taking the oil filter off) and covered the injury with epoxy. So, S&S is shipping me a new one. Ya know, I'm not the best chopper mechanic in the world. But, I'm better than that...

Today was Ness Chopper test day. It took 3 takes and then it was an hour ride around the local towns here. I had to sort out some throttle cable routing, steering-stop adjustment, drive belt alignment and then ...Boom! Perfect. The bike ran great. I am very impressed with the Baker gears. Great shifting and easy to find neutral. Now, if I could get the neutral light to go out...
My buddy Don Morgan
drove his Roadmaster. It was a great time.
But, on the way home the Ness started to blow heavy oil smoke. I'm guessing crank case vent, but, I guess I'll see.

Well, it's been a long winter of restoring the Arlen Ness Highliner. I learned a lot about Harley's Dyna platform. Thanks to Forrest Barloon, Don Morgan, John Vroman, Suzie from Ness and JT from Baker Drivetrain for all their help. And thank all of you for following along on the progress and your words of encouragement. Let's see if it starts. Keep your fingers crossed....

This week we made a little more progress on the NESS. I had to reassemble the clutch actuator, because my shade-tree adjustment trick didn't work on a Baker RSD. Seems to be better now. My sissy bar from Ginz Choppers came in too. We popped her on along with the rear wheel. It's starting to look like a motorcycle again.

Friends
I spent a few hours in the shop today, working on the Ness. I reassembled the wheel ( I used NOS Harley bearings from 2006), mounted it, hooked up the front brakes and replaced the front engine isolator. Everything went well. Saturday, I'll hit it again. I'm still waiting on the fender struts and a delicious sissy-bar. I also noticed I was missing a tire valve cap. I rooted around in the spares box and came up with a set of Ducati caps. I don't have a Ducati Diavel anymore and I love those caps. And they ARE red.....I'll use em.

I headed to Sterling, IL today to pick up some parts that were rechromed by Quality Plating. Gary Schultz did a great job. I highly recommend them.

Well, it looks more like a bike with the gas tank mounted and the battery cover on. The previous owner/dealer used whatever screws they had in the drawer to hold the box on. We drilled it for well-nuts as the good Lord intended. Now it is correct.

Well, here is a Ness Chopper update: I found (after installing the starter motor, primary and clutch assembly) the shift lever cannot be installed on the transmission with any of the above in place. I also learned that if I use an impact gun and power ratchet, I can remove the above parts in 45 minutes. On a "positive" note, I hooked up the battery and despite my rewiring, all the electrical systems worked when I tested them.

The new wire harness pieces are made up for the neutral switch and oil pressure sensor, the fork tubes are threaded in and the handle bar controls, clutch lever and throttle housing are all buttoned up. Headlight, turn signals and front fender all are on. Tomorrow, maybe the primary drive and clutch pack, unless there is a hitch...
