The Dakota K Story. My parents, Neil and Joan Koebernick, founded the company together in December of 1974, starting as service station dealers for Union Oil Company of California. The company was first named Dakota Union 76. The name Dakota came from the state where My father was born, North Dakota. They always believed in helping the community that supported them and invested back into the community on a regular basis. They hired high school students, supported high school programs to help enrich the students’ lives, donated to local charities, and supported several sports programs over the years. In 1991 they made the move to eliminate gasoline from the business and focus on automotive repair. At that point in time they took on the name of Dakota K Auto Repair and Tire Center. With more focus put on automotive repair, they became leaders in the industry. My parents achieved many successes over the years by always running the business with the highest of standards. In 1996, Dakota K was named a semi-finalist for the Illinois Family Business of the Year. In 1997 and 1998, they won awards from the Chicagoland Better Business Bureau and the National Better Business Bureau for Ethics. In subsequent years they won other industry and ethics awards. In January of 2010, I purchased the business from my parents and continue to serve the community by supporting the local high schools, sports organizations, park district programs, local charity groups, and being members of Rotary and Chamber of Commerce. I learned from my parents that by admitting our mistakes, learning from them, and correcting them is of the utmost importance in building and maintaining the trust of our community, suppliers, employees, and most of all our customers. By always maintaining the highest business standards, I hope to see the business continue for many years to come. We Work With Our Customers We encourage our customers to specifically explain their vehicle’s problems. Like a doctor, we need to hear all the symptoms in order to make an accurate diagnosis. By working together we can help you avoid multiple trips to the repair shop and having to leave your car longer than absolutely necessary. Occasionally, your vehicle may have a computer-related, intermittent problem. With all the “specifics” it may be possible to find the problem without the vehicle “acting up”. If not, we’ll ask you to work with us to get it solved and we may ask you to leave your vehicle for more than a day.
