Wisconsin’s EHD outbreak has now topped 1,600 reported deer.
The Wisconsin DNR says reports of sick or dead deer consistent with epizootic hemorrhagic disease have climbed dramatically across southeastern Wisconsin. Washington County alone has more than 1,100 reports, with another 340-plus in Waukesha County, around 70 in Ozaukee, about 50 in Dodge and fewer than 10 in Milwaukee. The DNR stresses these are reported sick or dead deer showing signs consistent with EHD, not 1,600 laboratory-confirmed cases.
What makes this especially relevant to hunters is the timing. Wisconsin’s archery and crossbow season opened September 12, and despite the scale of the outbreak, the DNR says the 2026 deer season will continue under the existing regulations with no reductions to harvest opportunities. The agency says localized EHD mortality can be substantial, but affected deer populations generally rebound quickly.
EHD is spread by biting midges and can kill deer rapidly, often leaving dead deer near water. With more than 1,600 reports now on the books, this is an outbreak Wisconsin hunters will be watching closely as the season gets underway.
