Thank you to everyone who volunteered at our July litter cleanup. 19 people picked up 800 lbs. of trash from around Silver City parks, trails, roads, and businesses. Especially during the monsoon system, it's critical to clean up all litter from the ground before it can get washed downstream clog drainages, or become dangerous flood debris. Special shout-out to our newest volunteer organization, the 24 Club. Thank you ladies for all you do to support our Silver City community!

END OF WATCH

United States Emergency Responder Struck-By Death #22 of 2026 is Suffolk County Sheriff Corporal Brett Martin, 51 who was struck and killed assisting a motorist.

It is with profound sadness that Slow Down Move Over, Inc. mourns the loss of Corporal Brett Martin, 51, of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department, who was killed Monday night while doing what first responders do every single day… putting the safety of complete strangers ahead of their own.

Just after 8:30 p.m. on Interstate 95 southbound in Boxford, Massachusetts, Corporal Martin stopped to assist a stranded motorist. While helping someone in need, he was struck by an oncoming vehicle. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, he later succumbed to his injuries.

He did not lose his life chasing a criminal.

He did not lose his life in a gunfight.

He lost his life because he stopped to help.

Every flashing light on the side of the roadway represents someone’s husband, wife, mother, father, son, daughter, friend, or partner. They deserve to return home after every shift. Yet time and time again, families are left planning funerals because drivers fail to slow down, move over, or simply pay attention.

This tragedy is another heartbreaking reminder that roadside incidents are among the most dangerous situations first responders face. A disabled vehicle can be replaced. A life cannot.

Slow Down Move Over, Inc. extends our deepest condolences to the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department, Corporal Martin’s family, friends, and every member of the law enforcement community grieving this unimaginable loss.

Please… when you see emergency lights, tow trucks, law enforcement, fire apparatus, EMS, highway workers, or service patrol vehicles on the shoulder, SLOW DOWN AND MOVE OVER. That simple decision may save a life.

Rest easy, Corporal Brett Martin.

Your watch has ended. We will carry your memory forward and continue fighting for safer roadways in your honor.

Mark your calendars, Silver City! Here is our Pick It Up - Toss No Más cleanup schedule for the year. We meet on the third Saturday of (almost) every month to pick up litter and debris from our streets, parks, trails, and neighborhoods. Litter is ugly, leads to chemical and micro-plastic pollution, decreases tourism and small business revenue, and can lead to car accidents. YOU CAN HELP by donating 1-3 hours of your time at a litter cleanup. Bring a friend or the whole family. It's a great way to exercise, help our community, and kick off a fun weekend in beautiful Silver City. We hope to see you on February 21st for our first cleanup!

Happy New Year, neighbors! Before our 2026 cleanups begin (on February 21st), we are reflecting on the successes of our 2025 program. You can read more about our annual program review on our website: silvercitytossnomas.org/2025-year-in-review/. We are so thankful for all of the cleanup volunteers and community supporters that drive our program. Together, we picked up 7,570 lbs. of trash and debris around Silver City. That's an incredible total for just ten, morning cleanups! The trash we collected included ci******es and bottles dropped as litter, wrappers blown out of trash cans and dumpsters by the wind, highway debris from uncovered loads and accidents, and household items that floated away during storms. City workers and Department of Transportation staff work constantly to clean up this trash, but there's just too much. Our entire community needs to work together to change habits, improve our waste management systems, and pick up the litter that has already fallen on the ground. Together, we can make Silver City an even cleaner, safer, healthier, and more beautiful place to live!
