The Fiat 124 at 60: A Global Icon
Sixty years ago, Fiat launched the 124 — a car that perfectly captured the spirit of a changing Europe. Introduced in 1966 as a practical, modern family sedan, it replaced the 1300 and 1500 with clean lines, rear-wheel drive, coil-spring rear suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, and a lively four-cylinder engine.
The formula worked brilliantly. In 1967 the 124 earned European Car of the Year honors and quickly became a bestseller. Fiat expanded the range with the Familiare wagon, Sport Coupé, and the iconic Pininfarina Spider.
Its influence went far beyond Italy. Licensed production created a worldwide family:
• Turkey: Built as the Murat 124 by Tofaş (1971–1977).
• Russia: The legendary Lada VAZ-2101 (Zhiguli/Riva), produced for decades.
• India: Premier 118NE (1986–1999) with a Nissan engine.
• Spain: Popular SEAT 124 (1968–1976).
• Bulgaria: Pirin-Fiat assembled from CKD kits (1967–1971).
Production of the Fiat 124 sedan ended in 1974, but the Spider continued until 1985 and various Lada derivatives lived on even longer.
Balanced, affordable, and adaptable, the Fiat 124 wasn’t just a successful model — it was a symbol of mobility and optimism that crossed borders and generations.
Happy 60th!
