I saw a post that said …someday someone will have to get rid of everything you own… it reminded me of our journey to living full time in an RV.
When our parents passed away we had to clean out their things. It was difficult to do because we knew their belongings meant something to them. We didn’t have room to keep everything and had to decide what to do with everything. We sorted through and kept a few keepsakes.
We realized we didn’t want our kids to have to do it too. We started the next phase of our journey by watching YouTube videos about traveling in an RV and decided we didn’t need so many possessions. We wanted the freedom to see other places and retire early.
So we began going through our own belongings. With the awards, the medals, the certificates and many more things we had to say, is it something we need or is it something we are emotionally attached to. We would go back to the memory of throwing away our parents things and not wanting our family to have so much to go through to get rid of.
We took pictures of things we wanted to remember and sold or gave away useful things. We kept minimal things needed to live in an RV. It was a freeing feeling to not be weighted down by stuff!
As time got closer to moving into our RV we found we didn’t have time to finish sorting some things. We stored a bedroom set and a few other items that we will need to sort through again. We each kept one tote of keepsakes and one for our parents keepsakes.
Yes we sold our house, knowing someday we would possibly land somewhere in a smaller place. We have no idea when that will be because we still have so much to see. The thought of giving up the freedom makes me cringe right now.
Living in an RV can also be challenging. It has its ups and downs. As long as you know things will break and travel plans will change, it helps your attitude! Some positives are less space to clean and when you go shopping it is usually only for necessities. There is not much room to collect things! The clutter gets to you!!
When we talk with people that don’t travel full time it is hard for them to fathom anything like this. It was hard for me too, until I started watching YouTube videos of people that were doing it! I had to get past what society has conditioned us to believe. You know you have to own a house!
As we travel we meet so many incredible and genuine people that understand how we feel. We love hearing their stories. There are many that we have felt a strong connection with and stay in contac. We still have many friends and family that we love to come back and see and spend time with too! We do miss them so much. ❤️
So we spend time when it is warm with friends and family then travel south to be able to be outside during the colder months. When we travel back north we miss our friends we spend time with during the winter!
Our lives have changed dramatically and we still love the adventures. So for now we will keep living full-time in an RV.
Be grateful for everything in your life, especially if you catch yourself being negative! Find joy everyday! Life is short!
See you in the road!
