Your engine air filter is the only thing standing between that grit and the internal components of your motor. Coolant does more than just prevent overheating, but it also contains additives that protect your water pump and radiator from internal rust and scale. Over time, that fluid becomes acidic and loses its protective properties. A cooling system flush is a simple preventative service that can save you from a much more expensive head gasket or radiator replacement down the road.
