Fixing a trim switch on a Mercruiser. Not sure what I am getting into the fluid has been contaminated. But I know the switch is bad. The motor runs. Just not sure if the hydraulics work.

1993 Johnson Tracker 60hp that wouldn't start... customer had the battery cables hooked up backwards!

Fixed the cables, checked compression (it was good), but it still wouldn't fire unless fully choked. Kept it choked and all the old gunk finally broke loose - then she ran strong!

Just got this little 25hp running again after replacing the head gasket (it had milky water coming out the carb before). It’s definitely a smoker right now, but I think it’s mostly rich break-in smoke + extra oil in the mix.
Ran it in the tank for a bit and it’s idling decent and going into gear. Will do a full test run tomorrow and re-check compression.
What do you guys think — normal break-in smoke or should I be worried?
