20 MPH feels different when you hit the ground.
Everyone seems to want an e-bike or e-scooter these daysâand there are hundreds available on Facebook Marketplace. Theyâre fun, fast, quiet, and clean.
But riding one doesnât make you invincible.
At those speeds, a crash can break bones, fracture your face, send you to the emergency roomâor send a pedestrian jumping out of the way when you silently zip past at 20+ MPH.
E-bike injuries treated in emergency rooms are rising, according to the American College of Surgeons. So are deaths associated with them.
Wear the helmet.
Thatâs Safety Tip #1. Here are the rest:
⢠Follow local traffic laws
⢠Stay off sidewalks
⢠See and be seenâwear bright clothing
⢠Use reflectors, headlamps, a bell, or a horn
⢠Avoid abrupt, unpredictable movements
⢠Watch where youâre goingâand watch for obstacles
Crashes happen, and people get hurt. Following these common-sense tips increases the chance that youâand everyone else on the road or trailâmake it safely to work, school, home, or wherever youâre headed.
E-bikes can be a fun, fast way to get around this summer.
Just remember: They donât make you invincible.
