Labor Day weekend means full highways and a lot of drivers trying to make up time. Three things make the trip easier. Build in more time than the map says. Put your phone out of reach before you start the engine instead of trusting yourself to ignore it. And leave extra following distance, because in holiday traffic that gap is the only thing you control. This weekend also closes out the 100 Safest Days of Summer. Enjoy it, and get home safe.

Getting licensed in Ohio takes 24 hours of instruction and 8 hours behind the wheel, and All Star has both. The Class D online course is $70 and available statewide, so your teen can work through it around practices and homework. Pair it with our 8-hour drive package and you are set through the road test. Adult and 4-hour abbreviated options too. Summer and fall classes are enrolling.

Teach safe driving out loud so your teen hears the reasoning. Drive the way you want them to drive. Set the guidelines that are not negotiable. When people picture distracted driving, they picture a phone. That is only part of it. Visual distraction takes your eyes off the road. Manual takes your hands off the wheel. Cognitive takes your mind off driving entirely, which is why a hands-free call is safer but not actually safe. New drivers have the least experience recovering once attention slips, so we teach them to catch all three.

Ask any instructor where new drivers get overwhelmed and intersections come up first. Four rules cover most of it. Obey the traffic signals, and treat a yellow as a reason to stop rather than hurry. Look for pedestrians, especially on right turns when someone can hide behind your own mirror. Check all directions before you commit. And yield when the moment calls for it, because having the right of way and being safe are not always the same thing.
