Six men. A stack of wooden blocks. Ropes. Eight long hours. πŸͺ’

That was what it took to haul a Ford Model T from a creek near Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 1916. The task fell to garage owner Ernest Holmes Sr., and it sparked an idea. He mounted an iron chain, a pulley and strong poles onto a 1913 Cadillac, creating America's first wrecker. A rough name for a machine made to save. πŸ”§

His truck used two booms, letting one hold steady while the other did the lifting. That meant a car could climb a steep bank without tipping the truck. Between 1941 and 1945, Holmes supplied thousands of wreckers to the Allied forces. βš™οΈ

After that, each improvement solved a weakness in the design before it. Rubber slings lifted cars by their bumpers but could leave marks behind. The wheel-lift, developed in 1967, changed that by supporting the vehicle at its tires. πŸ›ž

Next came an even gentler solution: carry the whole car. Rollback flatbeds had originally hauled farm equipment. In 1972 Jerr-Dan, named for founders Jerry and Dan, took over the idea. By 1992, it added a two-angle deck low enough for sports cars to load without scraping their noses. 🏎️

As vehicles became heavier, tow trucks had to grow stronger too. In 2019 the Century M100 debuted in Chattanooga, where the story started. It became the world's first 100-ton rolling rotator, capable of lifting 200,000 pounds. πŸš›
