A letter to your wife from a car nut
October 20, 2010 at 8:31pm
1. A car guy needs to sit in the garage and look at his cars and parts for an hour or so at least once a week. You shouldn't talk to
him during this time unless you ask him if he wants a beer or a sandwich.
2. He is going to watch seemingly pointless car videos, some of which might just be cars and engine sounds. If you can't pretend you like
them, get him a flat screen for his garage.
3. The car guy will appear with snapshots of cars he took at a show and ask if you like them. Don't lie, because he will know. If you really
like a car, don't get too excited about it or he might go buy one. If you hate it, tell him why and be honest.
4. If you can't drive a car with a clutch, either let him teach you or let him drive. Trust me.
5. Everything he drives is for sale, as is everything other people drive.
6. He will modify the house to park more cars. Fences will become gates, basements will become machine shops, and laundry rooms will be
for building engines. Set your boundaries immediately after you move in.
7. You need to decide on the total number of cars he is allowed to own. Get him to agree, then have him write it down somewhere.
8. If the laundry room is in the garage, mark a trail between the door and the washer and dryer before the garage begins to fill up with
parts.
9. He will get bored with your car every six months and try to persuade you to sell it. Ignore that and tell him you enjoy driving it really
fast. That will make him understand.
10. Each spring, his car guy friends will show up and try to stash a car at your house, get him to split the cost of a car, or persuade him to
sell your car for a much older, less reliable car. Know who they are and don't let them in the house.
11. Don't go to the junkyard with him, you won't like it. That goes for swap meets as well.
Good luck!
