U.S. CATTLE REPORT 🏭🐂 Lubbock Feeders Announces Closure After 70 Years 📉🌾
According to EverythingLubbock.com, Lubbock Feeders has announced it will close after 70 years in operation, marking the end of one of the South Plains’ most recognizable agricultural institutions. Established in 1955 and having fed more than five million head of cattle, the yard has been both a major economic engine and cultural landmark for the region.
Manager and CEO Kyle Williams called the decision difficult and emotional, citing mounting economic and regulatory pressures. A key factor was the USDA’s November 2024 closure of the southern border to live cattle imports due to concerns over the New World screwworm. Historically, 60–70% of Lubbock Feeders’ inventory came from Mexico, and without that supply pipeline — combined with historically low U.S. cattle numbers and rising costs — operations became unsustainable.
The closure will impact far more than the yard itself, affecting local crop farmers, truckers, veterinarians, equipment suppliers and others connected to the cattle-feeding supply chain. While the yard will finish feeding out its remaining cattle, its closing marks the end of a 70-year chapter in South Plains history — one that shaped the region’s economy, culture and identity for generations.
