Mazda’s Rotary Engine Isn’t Dead Yet, And This New Patent Proves It
Mazda’s rotary engine may be far from finished. A newly published patent reveals that the Japanese automaker is developing a new exhaust gas recirculation system specifically designed for rotary engines, targeting one of the powertrain’s biggest challenges: efficiency and emissions.
The patented system uses two separate exhaust paths. The side port opens earlier in the combustion cycle, sending hotter exhaust toward a turbocharger turbine. Later, the peripheral port releases cooler exhaust, which is routed through a passage cast into the engine’s side structural housing and toward an EGR cooler.
That passage runs alongside the engine’s internal cooling system, allowing the exhaust gas to lose additional heat before reaching the cooler. Because the gas is already cooler, Mazda says the system can use a smaller EGR cooler, an important advantage given the limited space around a rotary engine.
The technology addresses a fundamental problem with rotary engines. They have traditionally relied on fuel-rich mixtures to control combustion temperatures, which hurts fuel economy and increases emissions. Mazda’s patented approach could allow a rotary to maintain a stoichiometric air-fuel ratio during high-load operation while using a more compact EGR system.
Mazda has already brought the rotary back into production as a range extender for the MX-30 R-EV, which also uses EGR technology. The company’s latest patent shows that development of the unusual engine layout is continuing.
It does not confirm a new RX sports car or any future production model. But for rotary enthusiasts, seeing Mazda continue solving the engine’s toughest engineering problems is certainly worth paying attention to.
