Are you getting terrible fuel milage??? It’s not just you.
Since the war people across the country have started to notice significant decreases in their fuel economy. Why is this?
The best theory right now is that the gas is being cut with ethanol. What is ethanol? Basically is corn. When you look at the pump, you’ll see a E with a percentage. E10 E85 etc. this is how much ethanol is in the fuel, 10 percent or 85 percent.
What does that mean? Well corn can be refined into a fuel mostly, but it has major draw backs, number one is its corrosive nature, in high concentrations like 85, special fuel lines and injectors are needed to compensate for this, when you see a “flex fuel” car, that is what you are seeing.
“But isn’t E85 race fuel won’t it make my car fast?” No. E85 is a very dull fuel that resists explosion. This is useful when using high pressure turbos and compression, but in a normal car, it just means its fuel that does not want to explode, and requires more energy to create that explosion, resulting in terrible economy or some cars just flat out unable to run on it.
It’s also bad for the air. Initially ethanol was marketed as a clean alternative, so percentages jumped to 15%, the decrease in efficiency was noticed immediately and when the math was finished, it was found that the decrease in milage, far out weighed any gain from using a “natural” source, it was soon lowered back to 10%
There is a significant shelf life issue with ethanol. Ethanol turns gelatinous with time, as little as 2-3 months can render it totally unusable, this clogs small jets in carburetors, or holes in injectors , pumps clog, fuel lines clog, as this continues we will start to see older cars that sit for a while suffer.
How can I help avoid all this? Make sure your car is in good shape, make sure your tires are inflated properly, make sure you adress all check engine lights, this can make a pretty big impact on your mpg.
Maverick gas stations sell non ethanol fuel, if you have a motorcycle, older car, or you know your car will sit for a while, use this. Yes it’s expencive but less expencive than a ruined fuel system.
