Water Pumps : what are they and why you should Care

The Cooling system in your vehicle is very simple, but very important. Coolant is pulled from your radiator into your engine by the water pump, through coolant passages and back into the radiator. The water pump is driven off the engine by a belt. Some will say: why should I care, what is a water pump anyway? When cooling systems aren’t maintained, Problems develop. Coolant gets contaminated, loses its properties. Belts wear and break. Water pumps wear and leak at the seals before failing. The list goes on. Cooling System Repair Bills can be huge. Give us a call at Gene’s Service Center and schedule an appointment to have us check your water pump.

Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday. It is one of my favorite holidays of the year. I love turkey and gravy, stuffing and mashed potatoes, and most of all having family near and I don’t see often enough.

This year it is even more important to Give Thanks. So many people’s lives have been devastated by COVID. For those of us who have survived and maintained health, we are very lucky.

This year, relish in the moments that you get to spend with your loved ones. If any time ever, this year should be testament that there are no guarantees tomorrow will ever come. So bring those close to you the love in your heart that you feel for them being in your life.

We will be closing on Thursday and Friday to observe the holiday and spend time with our loved ones. We will be back on Monday to continue to provide the scheduled maintenance and repair of your automobile to keep you safe on the road.

From all of us here at Gene’s Service Center, we wish you and those close to you a Happy and Healthy Thanksgiving.

Thank you for your continued patronage and support of us and our families.

Vehicle check-up

Vehicle check-ups are very important for the overall health of your vehicle as a whole. Quick-lube oil changes are very convenient in our "rat race" society that we live in today. In a perfect world we would be able to combine quick servicing with thorough inspections. But in reality this is not feasible at a low cost.

Here at Gene’s Service Center we have numerous customers - about 80% of our client list - who bring their vehicles in for every oil change and leave it with us for the day. The picture in this post is from one of those customer's vehicles that we routinely service. She was in for her normal scheduled maintenance - an older lady who is retired and doesn’t drive a lot of miles - so her oil changes are only about once a year. During our routine vehicle inspection we found that her front brakes were nearly worn out.

In this case - as with numerous cases with our regulars - she never had to go through the bewilderment of why she could feel her brakes grinding when she was coming to a stop, not to mention all of the terror in her mind as she wondered what was going wrong and if her brakes were going to fail.

Give us a call today and schedule an appointment to bring your vehicle in for its regularly scheduled maintenance. Then give yourself the peace of mind of driving down the road knowing your entire vehicle is being maintained.

Rattles

Have you ever been driving down the road and all the sudden you notice a peculiar rattle that you never noticed before? Or you pick up a friend and are driving to the movies and they ask you the question “What’s that noise?”

Sometimes rattles can be nothing more than a piece of trim that has cracked or a fastener has come loose. Other times rattles can be a sign of a serious problem.

If such a problem shown in the included photo goes undiagnosed and repaired, it can be very dangerous. Eventually the top of the strut mount will no longer be secured to the top of the suspension strut resulting in vehicle instability. It also increases the cost of repair.

So when you hear that noise you never noticed before, or your friend points out a noise you never paid attention to it may be nothing. But it could be something serious. It’s worth the time to have it investigated by someone qualified and experienced to be properly diagnosed. Then at least if it is not a big deal you know you’re safe.

Give us a call today and schedule an appointment if you have any odd noises, or you just want your vehicle checked out with its routine maintenance.

Check Engine Light Diagnostics

The check engine light can be a pesky little bu**er. It can be something as simple as a loose gas cap, or something as major as a bad computer. The downside to leaving the check engine light on is that subsequent failures are never known. There are literally thousands of diagnostic trouble codes, and only one tall tail light. Replacing parts until the light goes off can get quite expensive.

Serpentine Belts

Serpentine belts are a very simple but critical component of an engine. They used to be known as fan belts. Fan belts used to just run the fan which was attached to the water pump and the alternator. If they broke you could actually take a pair of pantyhose and tie them around the pulleys to get you in to a shop to get it repaired. Serpentine belts are quite a bit more complicated than the old fashion fan belts. The modern serpentine belts do last quite a bit longer than the old fashioned V belts did. They also run very quietly, so if you are getting belt noises you should get it checked out.

Give us a call here at Gene’s Service Center to have your belts checked.
