When it comes to electrical problems on a vehicle always and I mean, always, start with a battery test. Just today, we had two different vehicles with different electrical problems come into our shop.
The first vehicle was a lexus. The owner was having problems with a dead battery situation. She drove her vehicle to an auto parts store and had them check the battery and alternator. They informed her that her alternator was not charging. She had her vehicle towed to our shop for a quote. The quote was in the $900.00 range parts and labor. She did not ask us to check it, but instead wanted us to go ahead and do the repair. Before doing that repair we were going to check it. The battery was completely dead. We put a loaner battery in the vehicle so that we could drive it into the shop. While the engine was running, we checked the alternator with our batteey in it and guess what? The alternator was fine. We charged her battery for 2 hours and tested it, and it failed miserably. If you have a bad battery, it is not unusual for your alternator not to work correctly. We sold her a new battery for much less than the alternator quote. Her car left our shop with the charging system working like it should.

A second lady came by the shop this afternoon with a dashboard full of warning lights on her GMC. We pull the vehicle in and did a full system scan on all of the modules in the car. Several of the modules had multiple codes in them. Most of the codes were low voltage codes. We performed a charging system test, and guess what? Yep she had a bad battery. This was 2020 model vehicle with the original factory battery in it. We sold her a AGM battery and cleared the codes. All is well now.
Remember the electrical system in any vehicle starts with the battery. Make sure your battery is good before any further testing.

Please do not bring a vehicle for me to replace a part that you diagnosed to be at fault and you supplied the part and then be mad at me because that part did not fix your car. Please do not bring a vehicle to my shop for me to reprogram a computer that you diagnosed and purchased and then get mad when that new computer does not fix the original problem that you diagnosed.
