As the camping season approaches, I want to say something about 💩.

If I winterized your RV and hopefully if it was winterized by someone else, your RV holding tanks are mostly clean.

The holding tanks on your RV are just that, holding tanks. They are not septic tanks, they are not and we're never meant to be. They are intended to hold liquids until such time as they can be dumped into an approved sanitation system.
Even if you are connected to a system whether in a RV park or some other system, your tank valves should remain closed until you dump them and then closed again right after.
Keeping your tank valves closed along with using plenty of water will go a long way to prevent most if not all holding tank issues, even the dreaded 💩 pyramid

Now sure, you can add one of many approved products to aid in the digestion of the waste in the tank. But they are not necessary if you follow the above process.

And if you are one of those ...
That leave the black tank open because you are connected to a sanitation system, well, it's just a matter of time before you have real issues that are messy to fix at best and expensive to fix at worst.

So let's get ready for a great camping season. And keep those tanks closed

In my current location, most RVs are winterized and closed up for the season. Most of my work is from customers calling to get things repaired or serviced for the upcoming season.
I'm thinking about requiring payment for parts before I do the work. Slow pay is becoming an issue.

Another example of why I and many others don't make temporary repairs.

RV technician was called to check out a possible roof leak. Upon arrival, technician found the roof membrane had been ripped, probably by a tree branch, some time ago.
The exposed wood laminate was rotted. Technician recommended rhe RV be covered with a tarp until new roof material and substructure repairs could be scheduled.
Owner decided to not go that route. Owner asked technician to use eternbond tape and seal the roof material and the exposed substructure. Technician complied.
Charged customer $225.00 for the work.

Two weeks later, while rhe customer was traveling, the roof material came loose from the roof substructure and rolled back approximately 12 feet.
The customer contacted the technician and complained about the faulty work and subsequent roof failure. He asked the technician what he was going to do about the issue.
Technician said the work was temporary and was not meant to be a repair.
Customer intends to sue the technician for repairs.
I don't think this customer will win, however, the technician will most likely be out substantial monies for his defense.

Again, why I don't make temporary fixes.

Folks like this are everywhere.

Norcold 1210 4 door refrigerator. Door hangs and hard to open fix.

The travel lock pin ever so slightly protrudes into the locking slot. File the tip of the pin slightly a little at a time. Keep checking until door opens normally.
The effected door will mist often be the left refrigerator door

After a lot of research and many discussions with other technicians it appears that the most recommended procedure after a new found issue is discovered and the customer decides against the suggested repair, it is best to photograph the issue and return all prior work to as close to original found condition as possible.

Notify customer that you are unable to proceed due to customers position.

Almost all of the experienced technicians with which I discussed the issue with found my fault was moving forward and replacing the molding.

Again, almost all said mounting a obviously weakened roof was absolutely a no go. Only bad things can result while trying to make a temporary fix.

Lessons learned here in Show Low, Arizona.
Lots of RVs set up as permanent summer havens for the "Valley People" to retreat to when the weather turns hot.

Most of these are immaculate, inside and out.
But.....

A water heater not heating water, a furnace not working, an AC not cooling, all are aggravating, all are annoying and all can usually be resolved without much trouble and with minimal expense. Usually...

Most service calls fall into a few categories in my experince. From most common to least:
Electrical
Furnace / AC
Water Heater
Hydraulics
Refrigerator
No where on this list do you see roof...

I am of the opinion that all your RV maintenance should start with the roof. As I noted earlier, the usual suspects on my service calls can be resolved usually quickly and hopefully inexpensively.
But....
If you have a roof issue, failing sealant and or gaps in the trim or moldings.......you have a problem that only gets worse ad time goes by. Roof issues too are easily addressed if caught early. If they have existed for a prolonged period of time......you have a problem and it will not be inexpensive.

Check or have your roof checked regularly. It's cheap in the long run
