🔧 TECH TUESDAY: L-134 VALVE ADJUSTMENT

This week we’re covering how to properly adjust the valve tappet clearance on the Willys L-134 engine.

One important thing to know before you start: not all factory Willys manuals give the same valve clearance specification.

⚙️ MB/GPW: .014” intake & exhaust, hot or cold
⚙️ Early CJ-2A literature: .014” intake & exhaust, hot or cold
⚙️ Later Willys L-134 service literature: .016” intake & exhaust

Always check the specification appropriate for your engine and the service literature you’re following.

To make the adjustment easier, all 8 valves can be checked in two crankshaft positions:

Cylinder 1 at TDC on the COMPRESSION stroke:
Adjust Cylinder 1 Intake & Exhaust
Adjust Cylinder 2 Intake
Adjust Cylinder 3 Exhaust

Then rotate the crankshaft 360°.

Cylinder 4 at TDC on the COMPRESSION stroke:
Adjust Cylinder 4 Intake & Exhaust
Adjust Cylinder 3 Intake
Adjust Cylinder 2 Exhaust

The key is making sure the tappet you’re adjusting is riding on the heel/base circle of the cam, where the valve is fully closed.

Proper valve clearance is important for good compression, smooth running, and proper valve operation. If your L-134 has low compression, checking the valve adjustment is a great place to start.
