Myth Buster Friday Answer

FALSE — and this myth costs new car owners real money every year by sending them to dealers for services they could have done at a trusted independent shop.

The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act — a federal law enacted in 1975, the same year Parrotta's opened — specifically prohibits manufacturers from voiding a vehicle warranty simply because the owner chose to have it serviced at an independent shop rather than a dealership. A manufacturer can only void a warranty claim if they can demonstrate that the independent shop's work caused the specific failure being claimed. Routine maintenance — oil changes, tire rotations, brake service, filters, fluid services — performed by a qualified independent shop with the correct parts and fluids cannot void your factory warranty. The dealership is required to prove causation, not simply assert that independent service voided coverage. What this means practically: you can bring your brand new BMW, Tesla, Volvo, or any other vehicle to Parrotta's for routine maintenance, receive the same quality of service, pay less than dealer rates, and keep your factory warranty fully intact. Save the dealer for warranty repairs that are covered at no cost — and bring everything else to a shop that has been earning Pioneer Valley trust since 1975.
