The Summer heat can do nasty things to your tires and wheel alignment. Driving on hot pavement can cause your tire rubber to expand and contribute to blowouts, obviously, but it also causes expansion of rubber parts associated with your suspension system, too, and these parts can tear, rupture, or snap when under load. We all know that batteries can experience problems in the Wintertime....and there's not much worse than being stranded in the snow. BUT, did you know that their degradation is accelerated by the Summer heat? In fact, Summer is worse for your battery than Winter, and, while Winter is the testing of your battery, Summer is where the damage is done. Think about it: higher temperatures accelerate the chemical reactions in your battery, leading to heat that evaporates battery fluid, and this wear leads to increased corrosion that damages internal plates. So, maintaining your battery is extra important this time of year. Are YOU due for an oil change? If so, don't put it off! Proper and consistent lubrication is one of those "magic bullets" that can extend the life and performance of your car or truck, but there's even more to it than that. Routine oil changes and the use of high-quality full synthetic motor oils will improve gas mileage by preventing your engine from working too hard to do its job. Properly-lubricated parts slide easily over each other, making your engine run more smoothly and effortlessly, which means you're not burning more fuel to get the same output. It also minimizes wear-and-tear as of engine parts as well as minimizing the friction that creates so much heat in your engine compartment. Full synthetics are better at resisting thermal breakdown, and, with their more homogeneous molecular compositions, provide lower viscosities than natural oils, and the added synthetics boost performance with cleaning additives that keep you engine cleaner. Happy "Hump Day", European car or truck owners, drivers, and enthusiasts of South Jersey! Summer is always a great time, but there CAN be automotive problems of which you need to be aware as it gets hotter:

1. Rubber get softer, and rubber components may tear or rupture: think gaskets, air bladders (if you've got air suspension), belts, hoses, boots, and bellows.

2. Plastic components in engines may be more prone to breakage due to the hot temperatures combined with the even hotter engine temperatures. As Euro engines typically run a bit hotter than their domestic counterparts, this can lead to problems.

3. Higher temperatures accelerate battery degradation....and with many Euro vehicles requiring auxiliary batteries to power the more sophicated and demanding electrical systems that Euros typically possess, battery problems can be more common.

Ditmire Motorworks believes that educated customers are our best customers! We like to make sure that you UNDERSTAND a bit about your car to take some of the "mystery" out of automotive repairs. Let's spend some time on the main cause of the dreaded "check engine light": your emissions system. Your car's emissions system is responsible for making sure that your car is running clean and not giving off toxic waste gases that could harm the environment. European import cars and trucks are engineered to meet the stricter European environmental standards, and this system multiple components that collectively capture, direct, and break down waste gases to carbon dioxide and water. This system includes multiple components you may hear us mentioning if you're visiting for a check engine light and include the exhaust manifold, the catalytic converter, the oxygen sensors, the EGR valve, the evaporative emission control system (EVAP System), and the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system. If you're getting a check engine light, it could mean a lot of things, some of them not so major, but others being potentially catastophic problems. Not to worry, though, as you've got friends who can take care of those problems here at Ditmire Motorworks! If your car is still driving normally, likely culprits might include problems with your emissions system such as an oxygen sensor or something as minor as a loose or cracked gas cap, but it might be something more serious like a catalytic converter. BUT, if that check engine light is FLASHING, you're experiencing severe engine misfires that might be bad news for your engine.
