Only male turkeys actually gobble.
If you learned in preschool that a turkey goes "gobble, gobble," that's only about half true. Only male turkeys — appropriately named gobblers — actually make the sound. Female turkeys cackle instead. So if you're trying to figure out whether a turkey's a male or a female, just wait until they open their beaks.

The woman behind "Mary Had a Little Lamb" is also responsible for Thanksgiving's recognition as a national holiday.
Writer and editor Sarah Josepha Hale convinced President Abraham Lincoln to officially declare Thanksgiving a national holiday that recurred every year after years of persistent lobbying. The author also founded the American Ladies Magazine, which promoted women's issues long before suffrage. She wrote countless articles and letters to persuade the president to recognize the holiday federally, which she believed could help unify the Northern and Southern states amid gathering tensions and divisions. Hale kept at it, even after the Civil War broke out, and Lincoln actually wrote the proclamation just a week after her last letter in 1863.

Slow Cooker Pumpkin Butter
Make this creamy, sweet, and spiced Pumpkin Butter right in your slow cooker! You won’t believe how easy it is to make and how delicious it tastes on toast, biscuits, or stirred into your morning yogurt.
3 1/2 cups pumpkin puree (2 15-ounce cans worth)
2/3 cup unsweetened apple cider
1/2 cup maple syrup
1 tablespoon lemon juice
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
In the basin of the slow cooker, stir together all ingredients until well-mixed. Cover with the lid of the slow cooker, but place it slightly ajar so steam can escape.
Cook on high for 2-3 hours, or low for 4-5 hours, stirring every half hour or so. Pumpkin butter is done when it is thick, creamy, and smells potently of pumpkin spice. Taste and adjust seasoning to your liking, adding more maple syrup or spices as desired.
Transfer to a jar with a tight fitting lid and store in the fridge for up to two weeks.
To make this on the stovetop, combine all ingredients in a medium-size saucepan over very low heat. Cover pan with a lid slightly ajar and cook for 30-45 minutes, stirring frequently, until the pumpkin butter is thick, creamy, and smells potently of pumpkin spice.

NC Emergency Management
Hurricane #Dorian is forecast to continue moving WNW to NW over the next 48 hours, with forward speed becoming very slow as the center passes near or over the Grand Bahamas. Overall the track has shifted eastward where landfall in Florida only remains within the cone of uncertainty. A change to a northward track is likely sometime Tuesday, expected to maintain this general motion through late next week. Dorian will remain in a generally favorable environment for the next 3-4 days remaining a powerful hurricane during this time. Additional strengthening is likely today, then a period of slow weakening is expected.
It remains too early to discuss specific impacts to NC, however it currently appears impacts from Dorian will increase across NC mid to late next week. It is important to closely monitor the progression of Hurricane Dorian and have multiple ways to receive updates from trusted sources.

When a power outage occurs, many people turn to a portable generator for help.
Please use the following safety guidelines when using a portable generator:
Never connect a generator directly to your home’s wiring unless your home has been wired for generator use. This can cause backfeeding along power lines and electrocute anyone coming in contact with them, including lineworkers making repairs. Have a licensed electrician install the equipment necessary to safely connect emergency generators to your home.
Place the generator in a well-ventilated area where exhaust fumes will not enter your home. Just like your automobile, a portable generator uses an internal combustion engine that emits carbon monoxide. You should operate it outdoors in a well-ventilated, dry area, away from air intakes to your home.
Always plug appliances directly into generators. Connecting the generator to your home’s circuits or wiring must be done by a qualified, licensed electrician who will install a transfer switch to prevent backfeeding.
Use heavy-duty, outdoor-rated extension cords. Make sure extension cords are free of cuts or tears and the plug has three prongs. Overloaded cords can cause fires or equipment damage.
Ensure your generator is properly grounded.
Never overload a generator. A portable generator should only be used when necessary to power essential equipment or appliances.
Turn off all equipment powered by the generator before shutting it down.
Keep the generator dry. Operate it on a dry surface under an open structure.
Always have a fully charged fire extinguisher nearby.
Never fuel a generator while it is operating.
Read and adhere to the manufacturer’s instructions for safe operation. Never cut corners when it comes to safety.
Remember, when venturing outside after a severe storm, stay away from downed power lines and be alert to the possibility that tree limbs or debris may hide an electrical hazard. Assume that any dangling wires you encounter are electrical, and treat all downed or hanging power lines as if they are energized. Warn others to stay away and contact the electric utility.
We encourage you to protect the well-being and safety of your family during outages, and safeguard those who come to your aid during emergency situations. When we work together for safety and the good of our communities, we all benefit.

Tips for Choosing & Using Packing Materials
• When choosing box sizes, keep in mind not just what they can store, but how easy they will be to transport; choose smaller boxes for books and heavy items, and larger boxes for linens and clothing
• Avoid using newsprint to wrap items – the ink can transfer and stain; consider using clean, plain wrapping paper, or thin foam sheets for inexpensive items, and bubble wrap for valued breakables
• Estimate how much tape you’ll need to secure both the bottoms and tops of boxes (they may be turned upside down or topple during the move) and then buy double that amount of tape (it goes fast)
• Dish pack and glass pack kits are boxes that come with cardboard dividers and foam pockets for easy packing
• Fill boxes full, but not too full – boxes with loose contents can wobble and shift, and boxes that are too full can crush contents when being moved; use clothing or towels to fill in spaces
• Rolls of shrink wrap can be purchased to wrap cabinets, appliances, dressers and desks to keep drawers and doors shut; remove shrink wrap after relocation
• Mattress covers and sofa covers can be purchased for the move; canvas tarp is recommended for a storage period lasting more than a week
We offer a variety of packing supplies, boxes, locks, covers and other handy items. Our staff can be a great resource for creative ways to use these materials to solve packing and moving problems.
