The 1990s gave us three turbocharged engines that became closely tied to some of Japan’s most famous performance cars.
The Toyota 2JZ-GTE was a 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six best known for powering the Supra Turbo. Its strong bottom end and ability to handle substantial power increases made it a favorite among tuners.
The Nissan RB26DETT was a 2.6-liter twin-turbo inline-six developed for the Skyline GT-R. Its racing background and high-revving character helped make it one of Nissan’s most recognizable performance engines.
Then there’s the Mitsubishi 4G63T, a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four that powered generations of the Lancer Evolution. Smaller than the other two, it built its reputation through rally competition and all-wheel-drive performance.
The 2JZ-GTE had the largest displacement.
The RB26DETT became closely associated with the Skyline GT-R.
The 4G63T showed what a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder could do.
