Acura teased its first electric vehicle Thursday, and the grille alone is worth taking note of. The Acura Precision concept, which will make its public debut on August 18th during Monterey Car Week, has one of the most outlandishly bright LED grilles that I’ve ever seen on an EV (and I’ve seen a few).

The front end appears to carry over a lot of the design language from the Integra and MDX, including the five-point diamond shape and the angular headlights. But the embedded LED lights are far and away the most ostentatious grille that has been released to date.

THE CONCEPT MAY OR MAY NOT INFORM THE ACTUAL PRODUCTION VERSION OF ACURA’S FIRST EV
Full caveat: the concept may or may not inform the actual production version of Acura’s first EV, which will be built on top of General Motors’ Ultium electric architecture thanks to a partnership between the Detroit-based automaker and Acura’s parent company, Honda.

The dazzling front end will make its debut August 18th.

Rivian, the buzzy electric vehicle company backed by Ford and Amazon, reported a net loss of $1.71 billion in the second quarter of 2022 based on $364 million in revenue. It’s a sign that Rivian’s nascent EV business is picking up speed, albeit slowly compared to the previous quarter in which Rivian reported a net loss of $1.59 billion based on $95 million in revenue. Still, the company beat Wall Street expectations for revenue by about $26 million.

The earnings report was also an indication that Rivian still has a ways to go before it can deliver on its promise to upend the auto industry with beautifully designed, emissions-free, adventure-themed trucks and SUVs. The automaker said it expects to burn through $700 million in additional cash before the end of the year.

The earnings report comes on the heels of a positive production update in which Rivian said it made 4,401 vehicles during the three-month period, a 72 percent increase over the previous quarter, and delivered 4,467 vehicles, a 267 percent increase. The company didn’t provide a breakdown between R1T trucks and its electric delivery van (EDV) that is being built for Amazon. (Deliveries of the R1S SUV were delayed until later this year.)

Rivian generated $364 million in revenue.

One of the biggest things standing in the way of mass EV adoption is the lack of a reliable charging infrastructure, and the only way to convince the public to buy an EV is to counteract that by installing more chargers. Being able to charge at home is the biggest benefit, but not everyone has the luxury of a private driveway.

And that’s the real beauty of these chargers: they’re cheaper to install and aren’t in anyone’s way. They don’t need to jump through a whole lot of red tape for ground space and wiring, and don’t necessarily require dedicated parking spots that could just get ICE’d anyway (a term used by avid EV drivers describing charge spots occupied by internal-combustion-engine vehicles). You can parallel park like you normally would, follow the same parking rules that everyone else does, and charge from a power source stemming from pre-existing infrastructure.

Up to 70 percent cheaper to deploy.

Dear Tesla fan who wants to run over a kid to prove a point,

Hi, my name’s Andy and I’m a transportation editor. I saw on Twitter — yes, I know, not a great place to see things — that you were going to run over a kid to prove a point. Something about Tesla and Autopilot and some video on Twitter — again, bad place, should avoid — of a test showing a Tesla vehicle running over a kid-sized dummy and you wanting to prove that those tests are bogus and wrong so you were going to try to run over a real kid to prove your point.

Let’s not harm children just to win a Twitter fight.

Today, the DC circuit court released its decision, siding with the Federal Communications Commission, on its reallocation of part of the 5.9GHz band. It’s a big win for the FCC and a big loss for the auto industry, which has promised to use the airwaves to improve safety through a technology called “vehicle-to-vehicle” (V2V) or “vehicle-to-everything” (V2X) communication.

The problem, as hilariously put by Judge Justin Walker in his opinion, is that this technology has never really existed. It was one of those “just around the corner”-type innovations that has always been promised but never actually delivered. It was a fantasy, and today, the court’s basically said as much.

THE PROBLEM, AS HILARIOUSLY PUT BY JUDGE JUSTIN WALKER IN HIS OPINION, IS THAT THIS TECHNOLOGY HAS NEVER REALLY EXISTED
But first, a little history lesson: in 1999, the FCC agreed to set aside 75 megahertz of spectrum in the 5.9 gigahertz band for something called dedicated short-range communications (DSRC) services, which would be used to improve road safety through V2X technologies.

Broadly speaking, V2X allows vehicles to send and receive messages about road conditions, like speeding cars, weather, or traffic congestion. It could also help prevent crashes by using that information to make decisions, like applying emergency braking

The promise of V2V technology never materialized.

Volkswagen “cannot guarantee” that its ID.4 compact electric SUV will be eligible for the new electric vehicle tax credits that are set to go into effect after President Joe Biden signs the Inflation Reduction Act. The automaker isn’t alone in its confusion.

The auto industry is scrambling to adjust to the new rules requiring that EVs must be assembled in North America, using parts and supplies sourced domestically or from official trading partners, in order for customers to qualify for the $7,500 tax credit. Most EVs have batteries that are sourced from China, meaning the new rules are written in such a way as to effectively disqualify the vast majority of EVs on the road today.

In an email to customers, VW says it “expects but cannot guarantee” that model year 2022 and 2023 ID.4s will meet the new strict requirements. Due to the uncertainty, the automaker is urging its customers to enter into a “written binding contract to purchase” as their best chance of qualifying for the tax credits.

THE AUTO INDUSTRY IS SCRAMBLING TO ADJUST TO THE NEW RULES REQUIRING THAT EVS MUST BE ASSEMBLED IN NORTH AMERICA
VW is the latest car company to push binding contracts over reservations in the months before the new tax credits go into effect. BMW, Audi, Rivian, and others are also telling customers to sign purchasing agreements in order to qualify for the old tax credit, which has no rules requiring North American parts or assembly, according to Electrek.

That’s because the Inflation Reduction Act includes a “transition rule” by which any customer with a “written binding contract for purchase” of a new electric vehicle before the law goes into effect may choose to take the old tax credit, even if the vehicle is delivered after the bill’s enactment.

Reservations are out, binding contracts are in.
