Loss of control can easily happen when your rear tyres lose grip in slippery conditions. This can happen with ALL vehicles not just Rear Wheel Drive.

Adjustments can easily be made to the steering at the front when front traction is lost.

Oil: Recommended Viscosity

Viscosity is resistance to flow, it is represented by two numbers. The lower the number, the lower the viscosity of the oil and the faster the oil will move around the engine.

The first number ends with the letter 'W-', stands for Winter and represents the low temperature viscosity of the oil, it is a measurement that simulates starting a car on a cold winter day.

The second number or the high temperature viscosity is the number after the dash and is related to the viscosity of the oil as it is moving around your engine after the car has warmed up and is at normal engine temperature.

For example for 5W-30, the 5W part describes the viscosity of the oil at low temperatures and the 30 defines the viscosity of the oil at normal engine temperatures.

5W-30 will flow easier than a 10W-30 at start-up temperatures and a 10W-30 will flow easier than a 10W-40 at normal engine operating temperatures.

In the past, it was common for vehicles to require higher viscosity oils such as 20W-50’s. But as engine technology has advanced over the years, the size of engines and pathways in engine that oil flows through have gotten smaller and thinner. This has led over time to motor oil viscosity decreasing – currently 5W-30 and 5W-20 are the most popular grade and 0W-20 is the fastest growing grade. These lower viscosity motor oils are needed to move through the thin engine pathways to protect and clean metal surfaces. Lower viscosity motor oils also result in better fuel economy.

It is better to stay with the recommended oil viscosity even in engines with higher mileage, there are high mileage oils available that cater for higher mileage engines with the recommended viscosity.

Tyre Rotation: Front Wheel Drive

Tyres should be rotated every 10-15,000 km depending on your driving style. With proper rotation tyres should last a minimum of 30-35,000 km.

Front wheel drive vehicles generally have different length axles, the tyre on the shorter axle will wear faster. This tyre will tend to wear more on the outer edge. This is not an alignment issue!

If your vehicle has a full size spare, it can be included in rotations and increase overall tyre life.

Batteries
A battery is used to start your vehicle after which power is supplied by the vehicle's alternator. Once the vehicle is started the alternator charges the battery and runs all the electrical components.
A bad battery or starter will mean that your car will not start.
Test your battery before buying a new one, your charging system may be at fault.

Manufacture Date
Tyres since 2000 have the week and month stamped after the DOT marking on the tyre in the form WWYY (WW= 1-56 representing week manufactured, YY= 00-present representing the last two digits of the year).

When it comes to determining the age of a tire, it is easy to identify when a tire was manufactured by reading its Tire Identification Number (often referred to as the tire's serial number). Unlike vehicle identification numbers (VINs) and the serial numbers used on many other consumer goods...

Tyre Rotation
Tyre rotation will lead to even wear.
Tyres should be rotated every 3-4 months, especially if only the front tyres were balanced in the last rotation.
If your vehicle has a full size spare, it can be included in rotations and increase overall tyre life.
