The Bowen Boat brand which started in 1969, was designed by the late Brian Bowen. Carlos Sabga and Mr. Joe Pires both of
whom had many years in the boating industry and champions in their own right on the
international offshore powerboat racing circuits. Now owned and run solely by Mr. Pires, the
company has grown from strength to strength and with advances in the construction process, has
seen the product move away from wood to all composites which not only guarantees a stronger
built boat but one that will last a lifetime. Keeping up with material and composite technology the staff at Bowen with over 50 years’
experience is always kept up to date on applications and lamination techniques and builds one of
the strongest boats on the water, which contributes to the stability and performance of the boat in
the rough. In fact throughout the Caribbean, Bowen Boats are known as the boat “built to
perform for the rough Caribbean seas”

A name made for racing history: Checkmate. 🏁 In 1976, Checkmate crossed the finish in 1 hour and 13 minutes, setting what was then the fastest time over the 72-mile Great Race course. It was part of an incredible decade of racing in which Bowen hulls secured eight victories in eleven years. Crewed by N. Balladin and M. Gill, Ballistic powered their way to 1st place in the SPEC Class, while also securing an impressive 4th place overall.

A fantastic result for the team and another proud showing for the Bowen 25' SPEC Class hull on one of the Caribbean’s most demanding powerboat races.
