25 years ago, on a Sunday, just two days before we were attacked, I was riding my bike down the West Side Highway, along the Hudson River, all the way from my apartment to Battery Park, passing the Twin Towers along the way.
Two days later, everything changed.
When the news broke at school that the World Trade Center had collapsed, I honestly thought it was a joke. It didn’t feel real. Then the school went into lockdown, and suddenly we knew something terrible had happened.
I will never forget that day.
A day no New Yorker, and no American, will ever forget.
To the FDNY, NYPD, Port Authority Police, and every agency and first responder who answered the call that day — **thank you for your courage, your service, and your sacrifice. You ran toward danger when everyone else was running away. We will forever be grateful.
And a very special remembrance to my local firehouse:
FDNY Engine 54 — Ladder 4 — Battalion 9
They suffered one of the greatest losses of any firehouse that day, losing **15 members**.
These were not just firefighters. They were fathers, sons, brothers, husbands, friends, and members of our New York community.
They left their firehouse that morning to help others, knowing the danger but never hesitating. We remember every one of them. We honor their sacrifice. We will never forget.
