(Bore Scoring)
Time to wake the 996 up from hibernation! 🏁
The car has been sitting quietly in the garage since December 2024. During one of our HCD Trackdays, the coolant warning light came on. A closer inspection revealed coolant and oil mixing in the expansion tank.
The diagnosis? A cracked cylinder head. One of the known issues associated with the M96 engine, alongside the infamous IMS bearing failure and bore scoring.
Rather than rebuilding the original engine, we decided to take a different route: remove the M96 engine and Tiptronic transmission altogether and replace them with something better.
Enter the MA101 engine from the 997.2 GTS. A more modern and capable powerplant that fits the 996 chassis, making it an ideal candidate for this ambitious project.
Finding the right donor car, however, was another story. It took a year and a half to find a suitable candidate: a 997 GTS half-cut from Hong Kong. Arguably the next best thing to a GT3!
Luckily, it’s a rear-wheel-drive model, so there’s no need for a drivetrain conversion. It also comes with a PDK transmission, which is more than good enough for what we have in mind.
And so, the journey begins: transplanting the entire 997 GTS drivetrain into the 996.
Although both cars share the same basic chassis architecture, there are countless small and major differences that will make this swap anything but straightforward.
But that’s part of the fun. We’ll figure it out, make it work, and hopefully create something truly special along the way.
The goal? To build what could be the very first Porsche 996 GTS.
Let the project begin! 🔧🔥
