The Chevrolet 350 small-block debuted in 1967 as a 295-HP L48 option in the Camaro SS. Bore: 4.000 inches. Stroke: 3.480 inches. 350 cubic inches, 5.7 liters. It was the sweet spot of the small-block family: big enough for serious torque, small enough for a compact car. By 1969 it was available across the entire Chevrolet lineup, from Corvettes to Impalas. By 2002, when the last L31 Vortec 5700 rolled off the line, over 100 million small-block Chevys had been built across all displacements, and the 350 was the most produced of them all. Every GM division except Saturn and Geo used it. Even Ford guys use it in their projects. That's how dominant it is.
The 1970 LT-1 was the peak. Solid-lifter camshaft. 11.0:1 compression. 780-CFM Holley four-barrel. 2.02-inch intake and 1.60-inch exhaust valves. 370 HP at 6,000 RPM and 380 lb-ft at 4,000 RPM. The first small-block Corvette to break into the 13s: 13.8-second quarter-mile. The LT-1 proved that 350 cubic inches could run with big-blocks. Then emissions regulations gutted it: by 1975, the 350 was making 145 HP. Through the Eighties it crawled back up through the L98 with tuned-port fuel injection. By 1992, the Gen II LT1 with reverse-flow cooling restored the 350 to 300 HP in the Corvette. Then the LS arrived in 1997 and the Gen I 350 was finished, but the architecture lived on.
What made the 350 indestructible was its parts interchangeability. You could take heads from one variant, a crank from another, pistons from a third, and bolt them together. The aftermarket for the Chevy 350 is not an industry. It's an economy. Intake manifolds, heads, cams, carburetors, fuel injection kits, turbo kits, supercharger kits, stroker kits. You can build a 383 stroker (350 block + 400 crank) that makes 500 HP for under $5,000. You can build a fully forged, turbocharged 350 that makes 700 HP on a junkyard block. No other engine in history offers this combination of affordability, availability, simplicity, and potential.
The Chevy 350 still exists. GM's subsidiary in Springfield, Missouri produces it as a crate engine for replacement and hot rodding. You can buy a brand-new 350 from Chevrolet Performance in 2026. Seventy-one years after the first small-block Chevy left the Flint engine plant. The architecture evolved into the LS, then the LT, now the sixth-generation small-block for 2027, and the bore spacing hasn't changed since 1955: 4.4 inches. Everything else has been redesigned six times. The bore spacing is the same. That's how right they got it the first time.
