The 1983 Opel Manta 400 — that’s deep-cut rally legend territory. One of the most underrated RWD homologation specials of the golden rally era. Pure, lightweight, driver-focused, and absolutely begging to be sideways.
🔥 Opel Manta 400 – Quick Spec Sheet

🧠 Under the Hood

The Cosworth head + RWD = a total riot, especially on gravel.
🛞 Chassis & Handling
• Fully independent suspension (double wishbones front, live axle rear with panhard rod)
• L*D standard
• Close-ratio transmission
• Weighed just around 1,000–1,100 kg depending on spec
🏁 Group B Pedigree
• Campaigned by Opel Team Europe (OTE) in the WRC
• Piloted by legends like Ari Vatanen and Walter Röhrl
• Main rival to the Ford Es**rt RS and early Audis (before AWD dominance)
• RWD layout made it wild but precise — a true driver’s car
• Famous liveries: Rothmans, Andrews Heat for Hire, etc.
🎨 Design & Vibes
• Flared arches, ducktail spoiler, deep chin splitter
• Straight-up 80s muscle with rally soul
• Classic Irmscher touches (wheels, interior, gauges)
Interior was no-nonsense: buckets, harnesses, minimalist dash. All business.
🛠️ Restomod Potential (Yes Please 🙏)
Engine:
• Build the 2.4L with modern internals (forged pistons, rods)
• EFI conversion with standalone ECU (or keep the rally carbs for theater)
• Turbocharging? You animal.
Suspension:
• Adjustable coilovers (Bilstein, KW, or custom rally-spec)
• Reinforced chassis and cage if going full rally replica
Interior:
• Keep the vintage race-car look
• Stack gauges, switchgear, Sparco/Momo bits
• Subtle upgrades for daily usability: LED lighting, hidden audio, GPS dash?
🧊 Vibe Check
The Opel Manta 400 is for:
• The driver who’s obsessed with feel and balance
• The rally nerd who prefers left-foot braking to launch control
• The person who wants to build something nobody else has
