The LYNLEX Journey
I started out as a freelance seller, purchasing locally simply because of my passion for the automotive industry.
There was no big business plan in the beginning. I was simply doing something I enjoyed, helping people find the products they wanted and needed.
What started as a small passion slowly grew into what LYNLEX is today.
Starting a business is never easy.
When I first started, the market already had established brand agents, distributors and grey importers. Many had been around for years, with established relationships, resources and customer bases.
I had none of that.
I had to start with what I had.
With a little savings, I began doing parallel imports of popular automotive products and slowly worked my way up. Every dollar earned was an opportunity to reinvest. Every customer was an opportunity to build trust. Every mistake became a lesson.
Eventually, I wanted to do more.
With some financial support, I took a bigger step and started bringing in larger quantities through bigger imports. It was a bigger risk, but it was necessary if I wanted to grow.
Along the way, something happened that I am very proud of.
Some of the brands that we originally brought in through parallel importing eventually gave us the opportunity to become their agents.
For brands that already had established agents in Singapore, I worked even harder to prove that I could do more.
Not simply sell their products.
Not simply bring their products into the market.
But contribute to the brand, serve customers, develop the market and create value.
Eventually, some of those efforts paid off, and we were given the opportunity to represent brands that already had an established presence here.
Of course, not every brand story is the same.
Some brands have been established in Singapore for many years, with long-standing relationships, existing structures and business arrangements.
For those brands, we may remain a parallel retailer.
And that is perfectly fine.
It has never stopped me from moving forward.
My objective has always remained the same:
To build LYNLEX into that one automotive shop you can simply pop by for your needs — with genuine products, good choices, good service and good pricing.
I listen to what customers want.
I source what they need.
I try to offer more.
And I promote the business with whatever resources I have.
I don't have an unlimited marketing budget. I don't have a huge team. I don't have the resources of some of the larger companies in the industry.
So I learned to work differently.
I keep things as lean as possible and try to minimise unnecessary costs so that I can continue offering affordable and competitive pricing.
Sometimes that means I don't have the biggest margin.
Sometimes it means I have to work harder.
But I believe that if I can provide customers with the right product, at the right price, with the convenience of getting it when they need it, then I have created value.
That is what matters to me.
Over the years, the journey has also come with many challenges.
We have faced trademark issues, brand restrictions, infringements and other obstacles — not only locally, but overseas as well.
There were times when things became difficult.
There were times when I had to seek advice, rethink how we operated and find another way forward.
But none of those challenges brought us down.
With the right advice, we learned to adapt, understand our boundaries and minimise our impact while continuing to build the business.
Running a business is not about having everything go perfectly.
It is about learning how to keep going when things don't.
Then there are challenges that can seriously hurt any genuine automotive business:
Expired stock.
Counterfeit products.
Old inventories.
These are problems that affect the market as a whole.
Customers deserve to know what they are buying. Businesses that invest in genuine products and proper inventory should not have to compete against products that may be expired, counterfeit or improperly represented.
But competition itself has never been something I was afraid of.
There have been situations where other local businesses, unable to compete with us in certain areas, approached principals or brand owners and asked them to take action.
I chose to approach things differently.
I spoke to them.
I established a connection.
And I made it clear that they were more than welcome to continue with their grey imports.
Because I believe in fair competition.
Even if they can sometimes offer a better deal than me, I don't believe competition should mean trying to eliminate someone else from the market.
If they have customers, they should be able to serve them.
If they can offer a better price, let the customer decide.
If they have a different business model, that is their choice.
In fact, there have been occasions where they ran out of stock, and I was willing to supply them with my own stock so they could continue serving their customers.
Why?
Because I work differently.
I don't believe business is only about winning every single sale.
I believe there is room in the market for businesses that operate differently and bring different value to customers.
I don't want to compete only on price.
I bring convenience.
For a little more, customers can have access to availability, product choices, support and the convenience of dealing with someone who is willing to listen and source what they need.
Sometimes customers want the cheapest option.
Sometimes they want something immediately.
Sometimes they want someone they can ask.
Sometimes they simply don't want to spend hours searching through different sellers trying to find the right product.
That is where I believe LYNLEX can make a difference.
We listen.
We source.
We provide.
We try to make things easier.
And that convenience has value.
I am also thankful to the many people who have supported LYNLEX throughout this journey.
To our B2B customers who continue to work with us, even when we may not always be able to give them the absolute best price — thank you.
To our B2C customers who continue to purchase from us, come back to us and introduce your friends and family to LYNLEX — thank you.
To those who simply tell someone:
"Go to LYNLEX. They might have what you need."
Thank you.
Those recommendations may seem small, but to a business that was built from the ground up, they mean a lot.
Every customer matters.
Every recommendation matters.
Every opportunity matters.
Because LYNLEX was not built overnight.
It was built through small beginnings, small savings, big risks, hard work, mistakes, lessons, challenges and the support of many people along the way.
And through all of this, I have learned something important about brands and business.
Brand protection is not simply something that should be demanded.
It is something that should be earned.
It comes from the ability to create value.
The ability to build trust.
The ability to contribute to the market.
The ability to protect the reputation of the products you represent.
And ultimately, the ability to prove that you deserve that protection.
If you lose that ability, unfortunately, you may also lose that protection.
I don't say this out of anger.
I say it from experience.
Because I have experienced both sides.
I know what it feels like to be the small parallel importer trying to find a place in the market.
I also know what it feels like to work hard enough to earn the trust of brands and eventually become their representative.
That journey has taught me that opportunities are not always given.
Sometimes, you have to create them.
Sometimes, you have to prove yourself.
Sometimes, you have to keep knocking on the door until someone finally gives you a chance.
And sometimes, even after doing everything you can, the answer is still no.
But a "no" has never been enough to stop me.
Competition will always exist.
Grey imports will always exist.
New businesses will always come along.
Established businesses will continue to grow.
Brands will make their own decisions.
Customers will make their own choices.
That is business.
What matters is how we choose to compete.
For me, the answer has always been simple:
Listen.
Source.
Serve.
Compete fairly.
Create convenience.
Build relationships.
Keep moving forward.
I started with a small passion and very little.
Today, I look at what LYNLEX has become and I know there is still a long way to go.
We are not the biggest.
We may not have the biggest resources.
We may not represent every brand.
And we certainly won't win every customer.
But we are still here.
Still learning.
Still sourcing.
Still serving.
Still building.
And most importantly, still trying to do things our own way.
Because LYNLEX was never about simply selling automotive products.
It is about building a place where people know they can come in, ask, source and find what they need.
A place built on relationships rather than just transactions.
A business that started from passion, grew through persistence and continues because of the people who choose to support it.
To everyone who has been part of this journey — whether you bought one item, placed a large B2B order, introduced a friend, gave us advice, challenged us, supported us or simply believed in what we were trying to build:
Thank you.
This journey belongs to all of you as much as it belongs to me.
And we are not done yet.
LYNLEX keeps moving forward!
