K.I.S.S me: Many don't understand how batteries work, but it's ok we can explain.🫡
Batteries are actually electrical pumps. Imagine your wires and circuits as water pipes. The water in the pipes is your electrical current, measured in Amperes, and the speed of the water in your pipes measured in Volts.🔋⚡️

Other than being a pump, your battery also stores power and this amount of power can be charged and discharged over time. As with everything else including humans, it degrades with age and usage, unfortunately 🫣🫠

Once worn out, your electrical pump can no longer supply short bursts (commonly referred to as CCA/Cold Cranking Amps) to fire up your vehicle's starter. This can be true even if the battery's voltage is healthy (>12.5v). Modern batteries usually last about 2 years before this happens, with normal usage. Anything more is a plus, anything less and something may be draining and overworking your battery.🪫⚠️

K.I.S.S me: A spark is a short burst of electrical discharge, used to ignite the air and fuel mixture in a combustion engine. It also means strong feelings, i.e. "Should i continue this relationship because i don't feel the spark anymore 💔” But we're going to talk about the former.

A spark plug comes in different shapes and sizes depending on the design and intended power output of the engine. If you happen to look at a spark plug you might notice certain markings on it, namely the brand and a mix of numbers and letters. For the more common spark plug maker NGK, this is what the numbering system means (take for example a CR8EIX) :

C: Plug body/shell (Thread pitch, hex size)
R: Resistor
8: Heat range (For NGK, larger number denotes a colder plug)
E: Reach (Length of plug, seat type, semi or full thread)
IX: Firing end (In this case Iridium)

As mentioned there are many kinds of plugs used on different engines. It's true that the wrong plug can mean engine failure, so if you're not sure what fits you, do a simple google search to save yourself.📖

Quick question: Anyone can name the difference between the 3 plugs in the pictures? 👀

K.I.S.S me: A screw too short can cause unhappiness (and a hole in the wallet) 🥹💸

Most Xmax riders have heard tales, a common problem with the top side of the engine. A short M6 cap screw that holds the camshaft retainer plate. Some unlucky riders have had this screw dislodged as early as 12000+kms on the odometer. The retainer plate also holds the rocker arm shafts in place.

When the screw comes loose, the rocker arm shafts can spin 360° hitting the decompression assembly located on the camshaft itself. When this happens, you will notice these symptoms, to name a few:

❌ Ticking noises (loose screw bouncing around)
❌ Bike being harder to start (damaged decomp assy)
❌ Engine stalling (screw gets stuck between timing chain and cylinder head)

Replacing the camshaft (because the decomp assy is not sold separately) will set you back at least $300. Not to mention metal shavings being thrown around the engine causing damage to other parts as well 🙀

Solution: We offer replacing the screw with a longer part, torqued down to spec. The cylinder head has enough thread that allows for a longer screw to be used. This will cost you $100+ inclusive of labour and gaskets necessary as a preventive measure to a more hefty bill before other parts get damaged. Also we recommend replacing this screw if you have not done so, during your nearest valve clearance. Just because it didn't happen doesn't mean it won't. Prevention is better than cure 🤔

TLDR; 📖
In most cases, long screw good for holding things in place, short screw not so.

K.I.S.S me: Our keep-it-short-and-sweet articles for those who want to know more but don't like reading lengthy posts.

Valve clearance. It's been mentioned a few times on our page but here it is again as requested from our last IG poll.

VC is simply put the adjustment of gap between the camshaft and valves. The type of adjustment can vary from bike to bike as it may run different setups, and the mileage for VC can range from anywhere from 40k-60k but certain cases can be sooner than expected.

Some bikes use rocker arms typically smaller CC bikes (VC usually adjusted by loosening or tightening of tappet screws) and some use buckets typically bigger CC bikes (VC usually adjusted by swapping out a different thickness shim below the bucket). The concept is the same; the camshaft and valves are separate moving pieces of metal, and as metal heats up it expands.

Having no gap between these pieces will cause the valve to stay open when it expands as the camshaft will force it down to stay open. Having too much gap will create excessive, irritating ticking noises. How much gap depends on what bike you are riding 🏍

Adjusting the gap back to specified measurements (usually a range i.e. 0.13-0.18mm, specified by the bike manufacturer or aftermarket camshaft manufacturer, etc.) is crucial to the engine running smoothly.

TLDR; 📖
Less gap = more valve opening/lift = more power (in most cases)
More gap = more irritating noise = parts hitting each other with more force

Do you ever notice that even if the rest of your bike is clean, when your rims are dirty the bike will still look dirty? If you agree then believe us when we say a different set of rims will change the overall look of the bike.

Now in stock excel takasago asia cast rims, plug and play for your Sniper 150 and Y16. Excel takasago asia has been in the market for quite a long time, known for their rims' strength, quality and reliability.

When we say plug and play, it means everything is transferrable from your factory one (some aftermarket Sniper 150 rims use a 4-hole disc instead of a 5-hole one in front).

Rims are available only in black or gold at the moment and come in 2 sizes:
1.60x1.60
1.85x2.5

Prices start from $280 including L-valve and installation but pair up your rims with a set of tyres for special pricing. Whatsapp us at 97835485 for more enquiries 📱

How do you improve on something that has already been proven to perform? Maybe you can get some tips from because they just improved their cvt pulley kits for yamaha scooters.

Recently released in Singapore, we're here to point out some differences between the v1 and v2 pulley kits so you can make a more informed purchase.

The first thing you see when you open the box is the front drive face, the pulley with blades that look like a fan. To improve longevity, the v2 has a steel centre insert with splines that is machined together with the drive face as compared to a whole alloy unit of the v1. This is probably to prevent seizing of the part on the crankshaft in case the nut goes loose as many aerox riders have experienced.

The profiles of the pulley(size and angle) stay unchanged but the rollers that come with the v2 are now 13g(stock aerox and nmax rollers are 13g) as compared to the 11g rollers that come with the v1s.

Which should you get? The v2 costs $15 more than the v1, which retails at $85 at our store. Because the v2 kits come with 13g rollers, it will mean that users can have a more direct comparison of the pulleys vs stock ones (if you're the kind that likes to compare differences in how the bike performs). But if you're the kind that wants something proven, the v1 pulleys have given us nothing but good feedback to date in terms of longevity and performance.

Speak to us, drop us a WhatsApp @ 97835485 to make an appointment to install.

22/04/2022

There are a few ways or terms used to describe an engine overhaul. For example, some workshops term it a ‘top overhaul’ or partial rebuild. This happens when mechanics don’t have to take the whole engine out to rebuild and repair it, or they don’t overhaul the whole engine, just components of it such as replacing the pistons rings, cylinder liners or all pistons, if they need replacing. A top overhaul will get your engine back in shape, and its performance will be as good as or better than when it was new.

More extensive rebuilding is considered a major or full engine overhaul, and this requires the whole engine to be removed from the chassis, so it can be thoroughly taken apart. Every nut, bolt and removable part is cleaned and replaced with new, original factory engine parts. So, a complete engine overhaul is more expensive than a top overhaul/partial rebuild, for obvious reasons – the engine must be removed from the chassis, however, you vehicle’s engine will function like new or better.

This is why many people rebuild their vehicle’s engines every few years, especially for enthusiasts who care very much how well their ride sound, function and look. An engine rebuild can make your vehicle more dependable and run its best.

Bear's Garage takes pride in rebuilding engines because we know how inconvenient it can get without a proper functioning vehicle for transport. All engines are rebuilt with original factory parts, unless otherwise stated or if it’s an engine upgrade. We offer quality engine overhaul packages at affordable pricing with minimum downtime, so you get to spend more time with your bike rather than with us 😉

For booking or enquiries, Whatsapp or call us directly @ 97835485

Stay informed! Don't be an easy target for conniving service advisors and workshops selling overpriced products that have no benefit or products that don't work as good as claimed. Some riders even find joy in maintaining their bikes themselves. It gives bike owners a stronger sense of ownership and ride pride. You will also get to know your bike better.

Every ride should be safe, and a safe ride starts with proper checking. Remember when you were taking your license and you learn certain pre-ride checks? Sadly not many of us honestly perform pre-ride checks anymore. A safe bike ensures proper operation of your motorcycle and lowers chances of your bike breaking down. In this generation, the internet is a very powerful tool and there are many checklists that riders can use as a guide. The most commonly used and the one we recommend would be the T-CLOCS (Tires and Wheels, Controls, Lights and Electrical, Oil and Fluids, Chassis and Sidestand) put together by MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation). The T-CLOCS checklist can be obtained in PDF format from the link below:

https://www.msf-usa.org/downloads/T-CLOCS_Inspection_Checklist.pdf

Apart from the important safety aspects of riding, there are many other different kinds of maintenance to be performed on a motorcycle.

Modern bikes come with an Owner's Manual and it will list out the recommended periodic maintenance and adjustments that you should perform for your bike. We advise consumers to take these lists and tables as a maximum period that one's bike should be checked. Early periodic maintenance may hurt the pocket a bit but offers peace of mind. Some of these procedures are bike specific as bikes are different. Materials used for construction may also vary model to model. A common example of this would be valve clearance for engines. Some manufacturers will recommend an interval of 20,000kms, some may stretch to even 60,000kms. Quick search on Google will get your owner's manual, if you don't already have it upon purchase.

Not sure of your service intervals or what periodic maintenance to perform on your bike? Drop us a text on whatsapp @ 97835485 for enquiries or pricing of services.
