Lack of lubrication has claimed yet another victim. The tell tale signs were all present: Engine running rough with unusual knocking sounds, loss of power, and an unpleasant riding experience. This time apart from worn out rings it claimed another victim, the rocker arms.

For most bikes the engine oil stays in an oil sump, or the lowest point of the engine. The highest point of the engine or the furthesr away from that is usually where the camshaft and rocker arms are located. Even with bearings to reduce friction, lack of lubrication can cause sludge build up which blocks oil passages to the cylinder head. This starves the components in the cylinder head from lubrication and prolonged periods without will cause damage.

Take care of your bike and it will take care of you. Look out for signs like unusually high engine oil consumption and don't prolong service intervals.

Is bigger, better? If you've been following our articles on brakes, tyres and most other parts we will say no. Like everything else in life, there has to be a balance and too much of something may not be a good thing.

This time we look at brakes. A topic of discussion amongst riders that has been going on and is still going on would be the size of your master cylinder(MC). Put on you thinking caps, we'll go though this again.

The brembo RCS(ratio control system) is a very popular radial MC and although the outer dimensions are very similar throughout the range, the numbers can mean a lot of difference. The brake system is a hydraulic system with brake fluid as a medium for pressure transfer. The MC is essentially a pump to push medium and pressurise the system, with the calipers at the receiving end. An MC with a bigger piston size can be push more fluid through the hydraulic lines, doing more work with the same amount of lever input compared to a smaller MC. This is why with a bigger MC such as the RCS19, the lever feel will be harder than stock or a smaller RCS14.

But that should mean that the RCS19 would be better right? Not necessarily. Like pulleys, more distance covered with the same input means more effort. The brembo RCS has a range from 14-19mm which is catered to match single, small piston calipers to big, dual piston calipers. Getting the right size is subjective to riders. If rock hard lever feel is what you are looking for, an RCS19 on a stock 2B single piston caliper will do the trick. If not, we recommend 13-15mm MCs on single and 16-19mm MCs on dual caliper setup.

Fuel consumption of nearly 50kms per litre not possible for an aerox? Depends..

The FC for an automatic scooter using CVT in most cases will be higher than a normal bike with a normal gearbox. It's because most of the time the engine revs higher due to the nature of the transmission when in motion. So what did this owner do with us to command such praise?

Apart from normal periodic engine oil and gear oil servicing, he upgraded to an UMA racing CVT pulley kit. Nothing else. But we were fortunate to have his feedback on how he wanted his bike to behave so that we can adjust accordingly. Like your clothes, not one size can fit everyone.

This here is something you don't see everyday. If you have been messing around with carbs you might have took notice of this little gem that has been in production since the early 2000s.

A collab between carburetor manufacturers Mikuni/Keihin Japan and race parts manufacturer Yoshimura Japan, this carb has a straight needle with holes of different sizes instead of the usual tapered needle. Why? More power of course!

The holes atomize fuel better as air passes through the swept area of the carb body as opposed to 1 point in conventional carbs. This makes the tuning process slighly different but when this carb is properly tuned, it's proven to give more crisp throttle response AND better fuel efficiency. There's also the optional trick dual stacks to pair with these unique carbs that not only looks well but work as claimed.

The Yoshimura MJN line comes in many variants, from TM/TMR Mikuni carbs to YD downdraft and FCR Keihin carbs. Stuff like these don't come cheap though, the higher tier single FCR-MJN carbs with dual stacks can easily set you back more than 1500SGD and the quad TMR-MJN carbs can easily cross 3000SGD per set. Those prices are not even their black editions πŸ₯² We don't sell them but if you're interested you now have something else to google. If not, just swipe and oogle at these pictures.

All that glitters is not gold. Especially if you find glitter in your oil during servicing πŸ˜”

The engine oil in your machine has a few jobs, mainly:

-As a lubricant to lubricate moving parts (because metals don't move along well with each other)
-As a detergent to trap carbon from combustion (which is partly the reason why engine oil turns black) and to carry out other impurities along the engine (another reason why engine oil change is important)

If you get the chance to see glitter in your engine oil, it's not christmas in your engine but the shearing of metal parts. In most cases, these metallic bits will come from bearings as they do most of the work of making sure parts spin. This also means that there is already damage being done to the bearings. Over time bearing clearance will increase, resulting in knocking sounds.

Look out for these signs when servicing and rectify problems early, because debris in an engine can cause other components to prematurely fail. More parts damaged = hefty repair bill which we all want to avoid.

Compare the first 2 pictures, see anything wrong? Ghetto mods may work if done properly but with the introduction of more advanced aftermarket parts, some of them should be banned.

If you're still clueless about this, we'll explain. The grinded down part is called a woodruff key and it's sole purpose is to keep the magnet in place(slot on magnet in pic 3). Grinding it down allows for adjustment of ignition timing. This adjustment however, if done without a proper ignition light can cause more damage rather than good. Pic 4 shows a strip along the outer circumference of the magnet, where a magnetic sensor picks up signals, telling the ecu or cdi when to fire the spark plug. Advance the position of the magnet, you also advance your whole ignition curve. In this case, the 2mm removal of material easily advanced the curve by 10 degrees.

Aftermarket ignitions systems nowadays offer adjustable ignition curves and timing without the need for such modifications. An ignition curve is set by rpm and ignition timing(in degrees) can vary throughout the rpm range. Advancing timing by too much can cause pre-detonation, heating up of the cylinder and other related parts leading to failure.

Well, you already have Nissin calipers on your Aerox or Nmax but you feel the need for stronger brakes. You already upgraded your pads from the ones that come stock with the calipers with aftermarket sintered pads but it's still not enough for some reason. Or, you just want that extra bling...

Official Sunstar/Chemco 260mm floating discs available for preorder now, a big improvement over the stock 220mm. Separate mounting brackets also available for order if you're already running Nissin 2 piston calipers. If you're still on stock calipers or other aftermarket calipers and want that clean look, our Nissin preorders are still on till Sunday.

If you're feeling wobbly when the bike is in motion, there's a chance that your wheel bearings are asking for a change. Take a look at these pictures and we'll tell you what's wrong.

Scroll through our page and you'll find an article on bearings: what they do, how to read the markings and how to choose the right bearing for the right application. If not, just read on and we'll tell you specifially what and why wheel bearings are chosen as such.

Bearings are moving metal components and as all moving components, they require lubrication. They carry the load of the bike and are often the victims of uneven roads. Wheel bearings should be selectes with rubber coated covers: they are packed with grease and metal covers(first picture) do not seal as good. Water may enter and the grease within the bearings may leak through the covers, losing grease(second picture) and fail prematurely.

Signs of worn out wheel bearings are(but limited to): grinding sounds, poor handling (bike wobbles in turns or even on straights), presence of grease around the hubs, etc. Replacement of bearings are important if worn because it may compromise the safety of your ride.
