This pretty yellow-coloured Exiga came to find us for our Subaru tuning expertise to solve a strange issue. It was previously tuned by another tuner with very strange results. The power line in the graph was all over the place and even made a loop at the end. Turns out the MAP sensor was installed wrongly causing unstable fueling and a really bad tune. Fixed this for the customer and retuned the car . Managed to find an additional 47hp too.

Another week, another bomb 💣

Customer brought his Mercedes A180 for tuning. The car has no service history with us so prior to tuning, we did our pre-tuning hardware checks to ensure that the car was ready for tuning.

Story time:
The car was showing a fault code for engine oil pressure. Possibly this sensor is faulty so we check the sensor before proceeding with the tune. We put the car on the hoist to have a look at the under carriage and access the engine oil sump.

OMG! We were shocked to discover that,
1. 🤦🏻‍♂️ Engine under tray has been modified and is secured to the suspension arm with SUPER GLUE!!!

2. 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️ Drained the engine oil and found coolant in the engine oil. Traced this to a broken heat exchanger that allowed the engine oil and coolant to mix.

3. 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️😱 The bolts on the engine mountings are not properly fastened and if conditions are right (wrong?), the whole engine could dislodge itself from the mount. Maybe it might fall out of the car, maybe it won’t. But we wouldn’t want to be driving the car when that happens.

🤔 So what if we were tuning the car and the engine failed because of any of the above conditions??? Glad that we had discovered all these problems before any mishap happened!!!

What’s wrong in this picture? Can you spot it?

Customer dropped off his BMW F30 3series for tuning. This car has recently had a turbo upgrade that was installed at another workshop. When tuning, we found the car could not generate boost properly and there was a hissing noise when boosting. Upon inspection we found that only 3 of the turbo manifold nuts were fastened properly. Another 6 were so loose that you could remove them with just your fingers. And the one pictured below completely fell off!

There are a host of other problems with the turbo installation such as oil and coolant leaks. That’s why you should always send your car to an experienced and trusted workshop!

The clutch is the part in between the engine and the gearbox that allows you to shift gears. When the clutch pedal is pressed in, the engine is disconnected from the gearbox to allow you to shift gears. Releasing the clutch pedal will connect the engine back to the gearbox and send power through the gears and onwards to the wheels.

When the clutch starts to wear out, it will engage / disengage unsmoothly and eventually it will no longer be able to transmit power from the engine to the gearbox. When this happens, you will find that the engine will rev up when you try to accelerate, but car does not move much.

Here we have an example of a worn clutch and flywheel set.
