They’re round, black, made of rubber, and they have a hole in the middle where the wheel fits. In addition, they also are made by a ton of manufacturers and produced in a myriad of patterns and compounds.
How much do we actually know about tyres and what makes a tyre ‘good’? Here's a quick guide by our guest writer Issac Tan.
If you’re reading this, you’re probably a car enthusiast, so you will likely either have thought of or already performed a variety of modifications to your vehicle. At the end of the day, the only thing that matters for traction is your tyres – these are the four palm-sized patches of rubber that touch the ground of any car (yes, there is only that little rubber keeping you right side up).
For example, brakes stop the rotation of the wheel hubs, which in turn stops the rotation of the wheel and tyre assemblies, which then slow down the car. If the tyres don’t grip the ground properly, the brakes will immediately stop the wheel and tyre assemblies from rotating, resulting in wheel lockup (you’re a passenger in the driver seat at this point). In the case of suspension, how the suspension is tuned determines how much lateral or longitudinal load is placed on the tyres during cornering or braking. A tyre that cannot handle those loads will break traction, resulting in the car sliding or skidding.
As an introduction, let’s look at some of the factors (and myths) of tyres.
1. ‘A tyre with lower treadwear rating is definitely a better tyre, because it has more grip’
The treadwear number that you commonly see on most tyres belongs to the American UTQG (Uniform Tyre Quality Grading) rating. UTQG was created in 1978, and its testing methods have not really changed since the days when a harder rubber compound meant a durable, less grippy tyre, and a softer rubber compound meant a high wear, grippy tyre.
UTQG treadwear rating dictates that tyres must last at least as long as the declared rating, meaning that a manufacturer can under-declare a treadwear rating without being penalised. Tyre compounds have since evolved to the point where we now have high durability tyres that offer near road racing levels of performance, so some manufacturers have resorted to using UTQG treadwear rating as a marketing tool – lower treadwear rating to indicate a high-performance tyre, higher treadwear rating to indicate a common use tyre.
2. ‘This tyre has a soft sidewall/carcass, so it’s definitely not as good as a more rigid one’
While this may be true for a car pulling high lateral loads on a circuit, a rigid tyre may be a nightmare on pockmarked B-roads, skipping over undulations and imperfections, instead of conforming to them to provide more grip. It all depends on context and application.
3. ‘Running lower tyre pressure means I will have more grip’
Related to the above point, dropping the pressure of tyres will allow more ‘give’ in the tyre to allow it to conform to the road when subjected to high lateral loads, effectively increasing the size of the contact patch during cornering. However, dropping the pressure beyond a certain point results in the tyre carcass collapsing on itself, effectively reducing the contact patch to just the shoulder of the tyre.
4. ‘Wider tyres will give me more grip, so they are better, and will make me faster’
While a wider tyre offers the potential of a wider contact patch, it also introduces additional resistance to steering direction changes. Wider tyres can offer more absolute grip, but at the expense of directional change response, so choose wisely.
5. ‘I used 220kpa on ### model of tyre when I was driving my old car with 15” wheels, so I will use the same pressure on my new car with 18” wheels because it’s the same model’
Tyres are essentially an air bladder. If you half fill a football with air and have two people of different body weights stand on top of it, you will notice that it will deform more than when a heavier person stands on it. Using this analogy as an example, the same model of tyre may be constructed differently at different sizes and profiles, and different cars are definitely not of the same weight. There is no ‘one size fits all’ tyre pressure. Tyre pressure is unique to each combination of tyre/car/driver.
