๐Just like manual transmissions, automatic transmissions require the ability to let the engine turn while the wheels and gears in the transmission come to a stop. While vehicles with manual transmission cars use a clutch, however, automatic vehicles use a torque converter. The torque converter is located at the front of the transmission where it connects to the engine, and is essentially the middle man between the transmission and the engine.
