Anatomy of a Spark Plug and Its Components
A spark plug is an essential part of a gasoline engine, responsible for generating the spark that ignites the air–fuel mixture inside the combustion chamber. Its design ensures both reliable ignition and protection of the engine’s electronic systems.
Key components explained:
1. Terminal – The top of the spark plug, where it connects to the high-voltage cable from the ignition coil.
2. Corrugations – Grooves in the ceramic insulator that prevent electrical leakage and improve insulation.
3. Brand & Part Number – Identification markings that provide manufacturer details and the specific model of the spark plug.
4. Special Packing – Material designed to maintain tightness, absorb vibration, and ensure durability.
5. Insulator – Made of ceramic, it electrically isolates the current and prevents leakage into the plug body.
6. Resistor – Limits electromagnetic interference (EMI), protecting the vehicle’s electronic systems.
7. Metal Shell – The outer metal casing that supports the spark plug and acts as a ground conductor.
8. Seal (Gasket or Ring) – Ensures a tight seal between the spark plug and the engine cylinder head.
9. Copper Core – Provides excellent conductivity and helps dissipate heat efficiently.
10. Spark Gap – The small space between the central and ground electrodes where the spark is generated.
11. Central & Ground Electrodes – The central electrode carries high voltage, while the ground electrode completes the circuit; the spark occurs across the gap between them.
