The car was ordered at Renault Factories in France and was bought on the occasion of Zoia Ceaușescu marriage, by her parents, Nicolae and Elena Ceaușescu, on 9th of April 1983, with the money they obtained from the sale of a Mercedes passenger car with two seats, which was owned by Zoia.
A specialized department of state security dealt both with the sale of the Mercedes and the purchase of the Renault.
After the events which took place in 1989, the car was seized by the Prosecutor General's Office, as the couple were accused of "undermining the national economy". In October 1996, discontinuing of criminal prosecution and the return of the personal assets was ordered by an ordinance issued by the Prosecutor's Office. The car was only used for travelling outside Bucharest, as the couple preferred a Dacia 1310 car offered as a wedding gift by Nicolae and Elena Ceaușescu for getting around in the town
