Cruise control dead, start-stop never kicks in, or a P0504 that keeps coming back?
Check the brake pedal switch first. Most cars have two contacts in it: one closes and one opens when you brake.
The ECU compares them. If both say the same thing, it logs a fault and switches cruise control off.
The clutch switch matters too: it lets the engine crank, cancels cruise and helps the ECU manage torque during gear changes.
Press both pedals together and many ECUs cut torque back to idle. That is brake-throttle override.
Key takeaway: after pedal, master cylinder or clutch work, check the switch adjustment and live data before you replace parts.

Gearbox tip: DQ250 vs DQ381, and why the TCU matters after a remap

Both are VAG wet dual-clutch (DSG) gearboxes. The DQ250 is the older 6-speed. The DQ381 is its 7-speed successor, found in many newer MQB cars such as the Golf 7.5 GTI/R and Tiguan.

When engine torque goes up, the gearbox controller still applies its own torque limits. If the TCU is not adjusted, you can get torque cuts, slow shifts or clutch slip protection.

A TCU calibration typically adjusts:
- Torque limits per gear
- Clutch pressure and clamping
- Shift points and shift speed
- Launch and kick-down behaviour

Rule of thumb: match the TCU file to the real engine output and check clutch condition first. A worn clutch pack will slip no matter what the software says.

Do you tune the gearbox together with the engine, or only when problems show up?

Why does a diesel lose power after hours of hard work on a hot day?
Often the answer is the fuel temperature sensor, a small NTC part at the pump, rail, filter or return line.
Hot fuel is thinner and less dense, so every injected cubic millimetre carries less energy. The ECU corrects for it.
If the fuel gets too hot, the ECU derates to protect the pump and injectors. Trucks and tractors use fuel coolers for this reason.
Codes to know: P0180-P0189, P0168 and J1939 SPN 174.
Key takeaway: check the fuel cooler, return line and wiring before you replace the sensor, and keep fuel temperature protections on in any tune.

🔧 Tool news: AutoTuner adds Bosch MED17.2 bench support for Mini turbo engines

AutoTuner announced a new protocol on 28 October 2026: the Bosch MED17.2 ECU (Infineon TriCore TC1796) is now supported via Bench Normal Read (NR).

Supported Mini models listed by AutoTuner:
• Mini Cooper S (2007-2010+): 1.6 T, 1.6 T JCW kit, 1.6 T JCW (N14 / N18), 1.6 T JCW GP
• Mini Clubman (2007-2010+): 1.6 T, 1.6 T JCW (N14 / N18)
• Mini Roadster & Coupe (2011+): 1.6 T, 1.6 T JCW (N14)
• Mini Countryman (2009+): 1.6 T JCW, 1.6 T JCW (N14)
• Mini Paceman (2013+): 1.6 T JCW GP

Key points:
• Bench mode, readout includes bootloader + software + calibration
• About 1 minute to read, about 30 seconds to write
• Checksum correction and backup creation included

Good news for anyone tuning the N14 / N18 Mini Cooper S and JCW. As always, save a full backup before writing anything.

Why does a healthy truck or tractor feel flat on a mountain pass? 🏔️
At 2,000 m every breath of air holds roughly 20% less oxygen than at sea level.
A small barometric pressure (BARO) sensor tells the ECU how thin the air is.
The ECU then trims boost to protect the turbo, caps fuel to limit smoke and can derate torque in hot, high conditions.
Workshop tip: with the engine off, BARO and boost/MAP should read almost the same, and at altitude the value must be well below 101 kPa.
Key takeaway: Some power loss at altitude is normal protection; a wrong BARO reading makes the engine lose power everywhere.

A coolant temperature sensor costs little, but the ECU trusts it for almost everything during warm-up.
🌡️ It's an NTC thermistor: as coolant heats up, resistance falls and the signal voltage drops.
⚡ The ECU reads it through a 5 V pull-up divider, and some ECUs switch to a second range when warm, so a voltage "jump" can be normal.
🔧 ECT drives cold-start fuel, idle speed, ignition, glow time, fans, protection and even shift points.
❄️ Quick check: after an overnight stand, ECT and IAT should read close to ambient.
Key takeaway: a skewed sensor can cause rich running and P0128 without any circuit fault, so test it against the manufacturer table before blaming the thermostat.

OBD, bench or boot? Choose the right read method before you start.

Not every ECU can be read safely over OBD. Many newer Bosch MG1/MD1, Continental and Delphi units need a bench or boot connection to get a complete read.

✔ OBD: fastest, no ECU removal, but some ECUs only give a partial read
✔ Bench: ECU on the table, full read on many modern units
✔ Boot: direct processor access when bench mode isn't supported

Whatever method you use, always save the complete original read and send it to us with the vehicle and ECU details. Stage 1, Stage 2 and TCU files for cars, trucks and tractors, back in under one hour.

SPN 110 FMI 0, OC 3: what is a truck or tractor actually telling you? 🚛🚜
Heavy-duty machines use J1939 fault codes, and every code has three parts that matter.
SPN tells you WHAT is affected, FMI tells you HOW it failed, and OC tells you HOW OFTEN it has happened.
Same SPN, different FMI, different repair: FMI 0 can mean the engine is really overheating, while FMI 4 points to a sensor circuit shorted low.
Read DM1 (active) and DM2 (previously active) from every ECU, not just the engine, and check power and grounds before replacing parts.
Key takeaway: read the FMI before you pick up a spanner. It tells you whether you're chasing a mechanical problem, a wiring fault or a network issue.

Two new step-by-step tool guides are up on our site 🔧
AutoTuner: how to read and write an ECU by OBD, from vehicle selection and battery prep to normal vs virtual read, and why you should read the ECU again right before writing.
WinOLS: how to reuse your work on similar ECUs with map packs and scripts (F8), and what to do when a script "cannot be applied".
