Everyone's talking about the problem. Almost nobody's talking about the fix that's already sitting in their own workshop.

In June this year, at the SMMT Electrified summit, Volkswagen's own sales chief said the quiet part out loud. Martin Sander, the board member responsible for VW Passenger Cars' sales, marketing and aftersales, told the room: “Battery electric vehicles.

5 days fully booked with very constructive meetings.

Seven problems I heard, in three languages, from bodybuilders in eight countries, this week.

None of them is about the product. All of them are about how the business works.

1. Every customer wants a different size. Sales says yes, the workshop pays. Thirty different bodies cost what ten identical ones do — and nobody sells the end customer the standard, although the standard is the only thing that brings the price down.

2. Cash sits in stock and in advance payments. The small bodybuilder will not tie up capital in a trailer of kits; the large one negotiates payment terms before price. Supplier competition is increasingly won on payment conditions, not on the product.

3. Lead times no longer match. The customer wants the vehicle in four weeks; production delivers in ten. In between sits the dealer, who sells what is in stock.

4. Approval costs as much as a small business. Above 3.5 tonnes there is no EU individual approval; every new design is a new file; entry into a type approval costs tens of thousands. Some form associations to share it. Most do not.

5. Chassis data is locked. Portals reachable only through the importer, body builder manuals that never arrive, brackets the chassis maker does not supply. And the new electric chassis arrive with the battery between the frame rails and no body builder guidelines — the tipping system is redesigned from scratch.

6. You cannot find people. Welders, painters, fitters — that is the real reason bodybuilders are moving to kits: not the price, but the fact that a kit is fitted by the two people you have, not the ten you cannot hire.

7. Small markets, large investments. One extrusion die costs a year of sales for a bodybuilder in a country of two million people. Nobody buys it alone — which is why nobody buys it.

My conclusion after one week: none of the seven is solved by a better body. They are solved by standards, by open data, and by investments made together — supplier, bodybuilder and dealer at the same table.
